Thanks guys, I guessed it might be like that, just like removing Metalastik outers.
Is the loose needle set up standard? Presumably assembly requires grease and patience.

Wanted / For Sale / Seat foam
May 13, 2013, 01:32:04 PM
I recently purchased a new seat foam, long tall type to replace my sorry looking original. It came via ebay in the US so I don't know who made it.

It is extremely solid, not surprising when you consider that the new one weighs 5Lb 7ozs. The original weighed 1LB 10ozs!

I reckon the original had a lot of holes inside which I won't be able to see unless I cut it open.

Many thanks to the 2 Jerrys, all is revealed. I guessed it was like this but confirmation is always nice.
The previous owner had fitted 2 head gaskets to try and soften the power delivery, that's fine providing the head doesn't leak afterwards, machining the chamber is a better solution providing I don't go too far.
Jerry, I'd be happy to let you do it for me but you're the wrong side of the Atlantic.

What's meant by "better compression". If you're machining the head I presume you're increasing the chamber volume which lowers the CR which makes sense. My only question is how is the head machined?

I've searched the posts and there's a reference to increasing the chamber volume to 45cc. Has anyone got details of the head mod. Would a suitable thickness decompression plate work.

Wanted / For Sale / Need 35mm Fork Boots

There's a guy in the UK called Terry Weedy who has had repros made. They're good and I use them on my '75 griffon. They have the cable lug. Google Terry Weedy products. If he doesn't sell to the US let me know. I'll buy them and ship them for you.

Penton Talk / What am I doing? Greeves..

The Anglian used lightweight 37A crancases. Factory bikes often had these replaced these with the more substantial 34A cases for extra strengh. The clutch cover should be one of the small lightweight ones, you have the standard 34A cover. The TJS also used REH forks, it looks like you have the better Ceriani forks.
I'll PM a press shot if you need one.

I'm afraid you're too late to contact Frank Conley. Sadly he passed away last week.
The Anglians were made in '66 (TGS) '67 (THS) and '68 (TJS) They were all fitted with Villiers 37A engines which should be Prefixed 161FC.
I've got press photos of the UK Anglian which had the GRP red Tank fitted. Any info you require just send me a PM

I've already spoken to Tim Britton, the editor, and pointed out his error. He had 2 photos available with captions and got them mixed up. He'll probably slip an apology in the next issue.

Wanted / For Sale / Need Girlings for 73 Jackpiner

Keith,
According to the Girling 1974 catalogue your units should be No. 2605. The number you quoted is for a part of the unit, not the complete unit.
The 2605 is 12.9" extended, 10.4" compressed with an 8" dual rate 60/90 spring. (2.5" shock travel WOW!)

Wanted / For Sale / 78 350 Jawa ISDT, Ebay
June 15, 2011, 01:44:14 PM
Kip,
Not a bad price, I was defintely interested but it would have been $7500 by the time I got it back to the UK. I've got one anyway and far too many bikes already.

Wanted / For Sale / OT - Husky crank need
February 27, 2011, 03:50:17 AM
I did the drilling and tapping mod on a broken crank some years back. The mainshaft stub wasn't too hard to tap. This was on a ex Swedish army 350. The reason I did it was because a) I was skint (no money) and b) you couldn't buy spare parts. If they're available buy a new stub and rebuild the crank.

Penton Talk / Swinging arm bearings
February 13, 2014, 09:31:27 AM
I have a 1975 360 KTM (UK version almost the same as the mint 400). I am replacing the swinging arm needle bearings and expected to find  cartridge type needle rollers. When I removed the pin I found loose rollers running on the pin. Is this standard? It looks like the outer race is going to be a pig to remove. Any advice?
