Penton Talk / PVL flywheel weight
December 20, 2019, 09:08:56 AM
The flange of nut will need to be turned down to fit the ID of rotor weight.

I would like to mention here another important and overlooked part of an ignition ground path.
An Ignition stator ground begins (or ends) at the frame of the stator.
A painted engine case or oxidized stator adaptor plate will disrupt the ground path.
This will cause weak or no spark at all. make sure all mounting surfaces are free of paint/oxidation between backside of stator and engine case.

Hi Kyle, We can dynamically test your old Motoplat ignition components  here at Penton Racing Products. From there we can let you know what parts are good and give you some different options on how to have good reliable spark for your Penton.

Penton Talk / 400 MZ-B/Powerdynamo
June 23, 2014, 09:52:44 AM
Hi Brian,
We currently do not have a bolt on weight for the 24oz. Power Dynamo flywheel. We can special order this ignition kit with a 51oz flywheel that features a 13 oz. removable weight. This will give you the choice of having both a 38 & 51oz flywheel.

The only difference between the PVL kit # 70060 (250cc&less) and PVL kit # 70177 (open class engines) is the stator. The stator supplied with the 70177 kit has a 5000 wind stator. This stator generates AC voltage at a lower rpm. Since open class bikes have more compression and are harder to kick start, they need to spark as soon as possible.
The trade off is the timing curve, the 4000 wind stator is more suited to a higher revving engine such as 125 or 250. PVL rotors weigh just 11 oz. the Penton weight will add another 17oz.
The reason the Power dynamo has only one version for all the early KTM engines(76 10 799 00) is they have a flat timing curve & generate voltage at low rpm. The Power Dynamo rotor weighs 24 oz.

Hello Tom,
Our information indicates motoplat part # 9600162-1 fits all KTM  engines 1972 through 1978.
The 114641 number on the flywheel does not match any information we can find?

Penton Talk / JP Burns Up The Woods Again
November 04, 2013, 04:03:32 PM
I want to convey my personal thanks to all who endured the unpredictable weather, making the annual pig roast \ ride a day to remember for everyone. Saturday turned into an enjoyable time for the many remarkable people that were there. JP. did his best to dry out and heat up the woods for us! I look forward to seeing you all again,
many thanks.

Penton Racing Talk / Balancing the Crank
September 09, 2013, 11:12:46 AM
After reading page 41 in the Sachs manual, this is a simple & practical way to balance the crank shaft. This is also be a very time consuming process. I am sure the engine may run slightly smoother with this done but usually the different piston weighs only grams apart.
When rebuilding\restoring an engine i am mostly concerned with the runout betwen the 2 crank halves and not the "balance" of the crankshaft. The closer to 0 runout the less vibration the engine will have. This is usually the main source of engine vibration.

Penton Talk / timing setting for 74.5 400 mx
June 04, 2013, 01:09:09 PM
Hello Adrian, If you retard the timing to 1.8 mm BTDC will help your engine start easier, but the trade off is loosing a bit of peak performance.
