Penton Talk / Re: POG message board usage
June 08, 2024, 08:30:56 PM
I also check the 2 F/B Penton sites. Usually constructive posts...but with a much more diversified group membership...let's just say: not always.
This web site and this message board is THEE home of the Penton Owners Group. Period. End of Story.
I'll add my agreement that the board do a cost-to-maintain analysis and present it at the next meeting.
Let's figure out what it will cost to keep this message board operating.
My sense is a dues increase will be required AND accepted by those that consider it an honor to belong to the Penton Owners Group.

Penton Talk / Ed Youngblood Thanks!
October 07, 2023, 12:52:46 PM
Many many thanks to Ed Youngblood for his 3 part series in Still Keeping Track on the "behind the scenes" issues he had to deal with...as a 29 year old...at the 1973 US ISDT. Cancelled Insurance, angry East Germans, balky computers, a last minute lawsuit involving the flight to Boston on the Champion Spark Plugs jet...AMAZING details!

Perhaps the folks that actually LIVE in VA and WV would get active and start putting on races in those states...

The 2023 AHRMA Mid-Atlantic Region MX/XC season starts on the week-end of 4/15, 16 at Rocket Raceway near Three Springs PA. The MAR is the most successful Region in AHRMA for good reason: Excellent events put on and ridden by a great group of Vintage bike enthusiasts!. Come give one of our events a try...always looking for more Pentons! Full details at the Potomac Vintage Riders web site: https://www.pvrclub.org/cross_country.

Many Many thanks!

I don't see a photo of it on Jerry's web site...
But Jim H. owned/restored the 1963 DOT (250???) that the late Al Eames used to do the path-finding on many Berkshire Trials and mid-60's Enduros. That is a VERY special bike once ridden by one of our sport's true legends.
It deserves to be passed on to someone that knows it's historic value...sure hope it goes to a good home!

Being an Enduro (now Vintage XC) racer I'm used to the woods.

But I've got to say there were two "Grass Track" MX races that I've done that were just so "big grin on your face" fun.

One was the grass track test at the 2003 Reunion ride at Jim Hoelerich's.
The second was at McKee's Sky Ranch in WV.

Common thread? Both were laid out by the late Dick Mann.

So...At Ashcraft Farm, Reynlow and White Rose...that is what we are aiming for.
At Irish Valley and Shady Acres...both existing MX tracks...the goal will be Vintage friendly versions of their tracks.

It would be great to see you at some of our events again!

Well...since I just do the XC it's a bit out of my area...but I'll try

AHRMA has asked our MA Region group, led by Dave Kutskel, to add some Vintage friendly MX races to the "natural terrain" XC race venues that we use.
As an example, at the Ashcraft Farm XC race near Bellefonte PA.
For a few years the MA and NE Regions have been also holding a grass-track type Vintage / PV MX race on Saturday that has been VERY well received. No man-made killer jumps or whoops. Just rolling terrain...one older rider told me it reminded him of Unadilla...but Unadilla back in the early 70's!
As noted on the PVR web site: "Vintage friendly grass tracks and some old-school MX tracks with jumps appropriate for short travel Vintage bikes".
A good example of an old-school MX track would be Shady Acres in Friendsville Md.

Quite a few of the XC racers are making these 2 day weekend events now.
Some bringing an additional Vintage PV MX bike...some just racing their XC bike.
Conversely, it's hoped that many Vintage PV Mx racers will stick around and try their hand at an XC race.

It will be interesting to see how well it goes.

Penton Racing Talk / 2022 AHRMA Mid Atlantic XC Series
February 12, 2022, 04:41:27 PM
The 2022 AHRMA Mid Atlantic Region Cross Country Series kicks off on 4/10 at Three Springs PA.
10 race series, 6 best finishes qualifies the racer for an end-of-year award.
This is the best, fastest growing Vintage XC series in the country...again this year with 3 races for bikes up to 1999.
AA Class for the hot shoes...and women and novices can ride all 3 races if they wish.
Even Bob Close loves our events!!!

Note that the MAR will also host a 6 event MX/Grass Track Series this year.

Good day all. I've got a set of 35 mm tapered-top Ceriani forks on a 1974 Penton. I need one damper rod exactly 11.5 " in total length so I can end up with a matched set.
I also could use a set of correct rebound springs...although in previous posts many of you have stated that good old Chevy valve springs do just fine. Mine currently have springs found at the local Hardware store.

If you have the damper rod please send me an e/m at [email protected]

Thanks!

Wanted / For Sale / ceriani top out springs
January 02, 2022, 04:38:24 PM
So...to recap:
1. Mike is asking about "top out", aka "rebound" springs.
2. Not fork pre-load springs.
3. All Penton Ceriani's came with them...yet mine did not have them. I ended up adding them...carefully selected from the finest assortment of short coil springs found at my local hardware store. Better then nothing, and they seem to function...
4. The replies that refer to using PVC pipe are in reference to adding fork spring "pre-load"... not "top-out" springs.

Thanks for the clarifications...now I think I'll look around for some more of those Chevy valve springs...which can be used for either purpose![8D]

All Penton/KTM forks came with top out or return springs, as they are called in the parts book for these forks, regardless of year. I had a fire and had all mine in a parts box that got too hot and they all lost their sprung!

Ron, I do believe you are right!
I also used Chevy valve springs for fork spring pre-load...in fact they are still in my 74 Husky 125WR's Betors.
And it seems to me...since they can be cut to perhaps an inch or so...they could also be used as diy "top-out" (rebound) springs.

Excellent point(s) Richard Colahan.  I answered in a way you could do either.

Penton Racing Talk / AHRMA XC Shake Up
January 02, 2022, 12:39:34 PM
My sense is you are correct.
2 VXC races. 2 PVXC races.
Spread over the 3 days.
Keep an eye on the schedule to confirm...
BTW...I agree the loss of White Lightning is huge.
A wonderful XC event.

No details that I know of.  Typically a MotoFest only has a max of 2 days of XC racing but it would be cool to see three days. Just have to wait and see.
