Isn't a 54 a 250 frame?

Mike, not bad, I recognize a lot of parts combinations that I sent you along with. Nice choice on the rims. How does it run and start? I found some other parts belong to this project, shoot me your shipping address again. I've been dealing with health issues that are now clearing up. I'll be parting my 4 Jackpiners and Hare Scrambler later this spring.

The intake may have to be shorted for the actual fit. You also need to source a small section of filler neck hose from an automotive supply. Don't use a water hose as they are not fuel compatible. I'll get a pictur in the morning. You are only needing enough for 2 hose clamps such as the narrow ones that come on the Pentons. On the Harescramblers to fit a Mikuni you had to remove the rear spigot of the carb also to get the boot and carb fit.

I've only used 30 and 32mm Mikuni's. The standard on a '73 was a 30mm Bing. You may find you might be running out of air at top end.

The current used inventory is like finding hens teeth and priced as gold. And most likely a chunk missing from a thrown chain. Good to a see reproduction

QuoteDoug, I have a friend in Oregon looking for a Penton. What bikes do you have for sale and how can he contact you? Thank you, Mike

I run Noleen's on three of my bikes. A '75 250 and a pair of Jackpiners. I have a set of Koni's that are from back then, they were an accessory item from Hi-Point. I run Progressive on a Six-Days.

All of these Penton are available as I have two hip replacements and can't afford an injury on either

Penton Talk / Re: Welding Sachs cases

Are you trying to repair from a thrown chain? Clutch cover? Mag cover and or the case? The covers are easier and the engine case would require a little more involvement as in preheating and post heating. If it's the cases, they may need to be split and the gears removed before welding.

The cases are cast aluminum, normally porous. Nothing special alloy aluminum. I would use 5356 or 5556 as tig filler. I don't recommend 4043 as it's a braising alloy. Jerry Birky ten years back use to do these type repairs. There a lot of tricks in doing these types of repairs. YMMV

Penton Talk / Re: Jackpiner center case gasket

My brain is telling me that you removed the bolt on the bottom when you dropped the trans fluid. That bottom bolt is the starting gear stop. The bolt on the side case just below the counter shaft sprocket is the trans drain.

Only grease is used when assembling the center gasket. You soak it in water first.

Spare plug or for a compression release. I have a 125 Six-days that had one.

In '74 I had a '74.5 Six-days with a D motor. At the time I weighed #20 more the youngsters and the Penton weighed +#10 more that the Elsinores that favoered in the class. The Penton had a D motor and very seldom did I loose a holeshot. The torque out of the D was awesome. I think mine was equipped 32mm Bing. On the D, it was all about the porting. I even had an internal rotor ignition that I would swap out depending on altitude, and on the race location. I was racing in Colorado then.

Penton Talk / Re: Penton Mint 400 starting

Showroom original or race original. Back in the day we changed a lot of the features to make the bikes work for us. The term "Ready to race" while a modern term, did no apply then. With a little prep I could make water crossings completely submerging the engine on a hugh breather. Remember Pentons did not come with spark arresters. And a lot of exhausts were cut. Even Penton (High-Point) sold accessories. If you are racing, don't get caught up on original. That's for keeping in your living room on show. I have one bike that did come from someone's living room.

I have a 250 that I could not start. This was a complete rebuild with a Motoplat that was tested and remagnitized twice. Still wouldn't start. Just pop once in a while. Hip replacements while nice, do have their limits. Purchased and mounted a PowerDynamo(Vape) complete ignition. Started on second or third kick. I have their ignitions on all my Pentons now.

Adding .020 to the base sightly changes the deck height. You are changing port timing of both (intake and exhaust) at the same time. Just not enough to notice unless you are riding at a very high level. Then that would mean you could start the monster in the first place. I have about .015 added on the 250 and seems fine.

On another note I have one hip replacement and getting the other done in a few weeks. So I'm done. Will be posting all my Pentons come spring, I'm in Montana and locked in winter here.

I regret never riding or racing a Mint, as I raced a 100, 125, 175, and the 250 back in the 70's.

Motion Pro? I know you can get them for other vintage bikes.
