Wanted / For Sale / 1975 Penton Hare Scrambler parts

Good morning James, I am afraid I don't have a switch. You might want to consider one of Flanders switches. They look very similar to the original CEV part, work better and are much cheaper.

Cheers

Penton Talk / M25 crank shaft bearings

You have this combination of roller and ball bearings in Maico engines. This allows for the different thermal expansion of the engine case and crank shaft without the need for shimming. I just rebuilt a 1977 Maico. However, these roller bearings are hard to find and pricey too.

Larry I don't think anybody can know when these bikes were put together without looking through the factory records. The casting clock on my engine reads March 1973. This doesn't mean that the bike was assembled in March but it doesn't say November either. The facts are: all year indicators on the bike say 1973 but it is in 1974 configuration. According to the POG register its engine number is the second lowest known in the US. I claimed no more.

I am avoiding bearings with plastic cage in two stroke engines. I am worried that the contact with the gasoline weakens the plastic over time. For the rebuild I did I got FAG bearings with brass cage.

David, I've just seen that you are in the UK! A US vendor might not be ideal for you. You might want to try to get your components from Germany (still an inner EU purchase).

Bernhard Greiner
Oldtimer Motorradhandel
Am Bangraben 16
72336 Balingen

is the vendor of choice for Bing Germany (see http://www.bingpower.de/service/ersatzteilvertrieb/). Greiner's web site has an electronic look-up function that allows you to identify the components that were originally mounted on your 54/36/101. Here is what my search yielded (http://www.greiner-oldtimerteile.de/search.php?sid=979001523231507&ret=&action=exec&start=0&pattern=!54/36/101!&artnr=on&key=maxprice&name=on&desc=on&category=-1&minprice=&maxprice=):
Main jet: 160 (Bing number 44-051/160)
Jet needle: 4O1 (Bing number 46-360-4O1)
Needle jet: 3,16 (Bing number 45-120/3,16)
Nebulizer: type 4 (Bing number 51-554)
Slide: 22-645-230 (not available)
Pilot jet: 60 (Bing number 44-350/60)

Cheers

Andreas

You may want to contact the Bing Agency (http://www.bingcarburetor.com/index.html). They sell Bing components and from the carburetor numbers they can often find out which components were mounted originally. You may also want to replace the needle.

Kevin, Jerry Birky did this for me in 2014 when he was still at Penton Racing Products & Services (http://www.pentonracingproducts.com/). They might still have the equipment to do this work for you. I paid $27 for this service in 2014. Let us know if you find a different place performing this work.

Good luck

Andreas

This looks very clean! Is the motor already in good shape or do you plan to go through it? I have a Penton just like this but in pieces, it will be my next project.

Have fun!

Hi Scott,

Good that you are back to Pentons. Post some pictures of your project, that livens things up. Do you have a manual/repair handbook for the bike? If not, it's a worthwhile investment. Al Buehner (http://www.pentonpartsusa.com/) is selling them. He is also a good and reliable source for parts.

Cheers
