Penton Talk / clutch adjustment problem 72 six days 6spd
September 08, 2014, 07:24:43 PM
Hi Steve,

The sachs clutch upgrade includes a new clutch case cover with gasket and adjustment screw, a new and much improved clutch actuator which is entirely different.  The actuator has three ball bearings which are placed between the actuator and a base plate and this reduces the pull on the clutch lever.  I just installed my upgrade from pentonmotorcycles.com.  You have to transfer some items to the new cover. I'll be glad to help you with it if you have any problem.  Mike

Penton Talk / clutch adjustment problem 72 six days 6spd

JohnBorn, I sent you and email for some parts inquiry and maybe some additional help.  Rainman, I also purchased the sachs clutch upgrade kit........makes quite a difference in ease of operation.  I'm still trying to get the adjustment proper.  When it feels right, I think the clutch adjustment screw is rubbing on the pressure plate.  I believe a new pressure plate will make a big difference.  I have some pitting in the surface area where the adjustment screw contacts it.

First of all thanks for all the help. Today I tore down the clutch again and deglazed the discs(seems to have helped alot) reduced clutch dragging considerably.. I may not been thorough enough. May do it again.  I also found that the ball on the end of the clutch cable recesses into the cam cup slot.  Fixed that!  When I tried to adjust the clutch again I found that the brass adjustment screw is now too short to do any adjustment.

I need a new brass adjustment screw, and a cam fork (corroded and very weak).  The pressure plate has some pitting but I think it will work. Any parts out there?

I cut the clutch cable down because I believe the cable I have is for a 175 with the cable adjustment nuts at the clutch housing. Bought it used.  Couldn't find an old style new cable.

Penton Talk / Rear tire size for 125 Six days
April 24, 2014, 04:52:02 PM
Just installed a 4.10 x 18 on my 72 125 six days restoration.  Just fits, and clears the chain guard too.  Tight fit though.
Prior to restoration it had a 4.50 x 18 on it before, hence a damaged chain guard from tire rub.

Penton Talk / Spokes for Six Day Restoration
April 03, 2014, 06:00:22 PM
I'm restoring a 125 and in the process of ordering a set of stainless steel spokes from Buchanan.  Have the new Akron polished rim so I'm sending the rim and hub to Buchanan for the proper fit.
The new spokes and nipples (36) cost 100.00.  They are not polished but will do this and mount and true it. FYI

Penton Talk / 72 penton 125 clutch adjustment revisited
October 10, 2014, 01:03:07 PM
FYI  Was having problems with clutch adjustment, prematurely wearing down adjustment screw. Found the clutch assembly had a bit of wobble on the layshaft.  (worn layshaft)  Checked the layshaft with micrometer and found it had some wear where the bushing rides.  Removed the circlip and original shim at the outside end of the lay shaft. Fabricated and installed a thicker shim and installed a new bushing.  This tightend up the clutch on the layshaft eliminating end play and the wobble.  Clutch adjusted easily now and seems to remain in proper adjustment.  Was a real head scratcher for awhile!
