Penton Talk / Re: 2025, VMD, 25-27 July
January 20, 2025, 10:27:47 AM
Yes, the POG will be at VMD in 2025 in our usual spot near the bottom of the swap meet. Our abstaining for one year was to get the attention of the AMA in order to make a statement on the party atmosphere in the last few years. It worked and we had a meeting with the AMA to voice our concerns. They intently listened to what we had to say and have begun to tone things down. It won't happen overnight, but last year was better. See you all there.

Penton Talk / Dave Callison in the hospital
July 29, 2024, 07:41:51 AM
Sad to report that Dave is in the hospital. On Saturday afternoon we noticed an ambulance pulling up in front of Dave's swap meet space at Vintage Days. He has been confirmed with kidney failure and having had a heart attack. He is in intensive care in Mansfield, Ohio. Deb asked me to let our Penton family know. Sounds very serious and a long hard road for the Callison family. Just an hour before this happened, Dave and I were elbow to elbow trying to clear the swap meet of Penton parts.

Calling all Penton riders and racers going to Vintage Days. The Penton Owners Group is looking for Pentons to be displayed at the POG tent in the swap meet area. Bring them on over, the dirtier the better. Let's all make JP proud for his 99th birthday.

Penton Talk / Sachs cut gears
June 10, 2024, 12:12:15 PM
Another project I have been working on is getting the six speed gears cut. The key slot has been EDM cut 2mm wider to clean up worn edges and provide easier shifting. Gears are now available for $40 each. Shipping not included. If you have old ones to exchange, that would be nice. It will allow me to continue this service in the future. I will be at Vintage Days.

Penton Talk / Sachs ignition cover reproduction
June 10, 2024, 12:02:43 PM
I have started on a project to reproduce the Sachs ignition cover. Here is the first generation sample to check the fit up to the engine case. Options may include CNC,3D printing in plastic and aluminum. At this point, I am removing the speedo drive boss for cost reasons. All other details will be as original. Stay tuned for updates.

Penton Talk / Re: AMA Vintage Days

Yes, the POG will indeed be at the 2024 Vintage Days in our regular spot. We will have lots of room for anyone wanting to bring a Penton for display. If you plan on doing so, please RSVP so we know you're coming. Our site will look a bit different this year as we have decided not to rent a tent. We will have the POG pop ups with our regular merchandise for sale and membership registration.

If I don't answer, leave a message. My phone coverage is not so good unless I stand near my drill press.

Penton Talk / Re: POG message board usage

Thank you Rob Hugo for clarifying all this for everyone to understand. The big move away from this forum seemed to happen when we were hacked and down for a time. Users, still wanting to talk, moved to Facebook, me included. Being able to quickly and easily add photos was another reason. You are right that we should still be posting here for posterity. Being able to search topics is one of the best features of this site. I am going to change my habits and return here. I am getting tired of Facebook adds and junk.

Penton Talk / Re: Sachs clutch hub

Bill
The gaskets you have are correct. Just put it together.
When I assemble a clutch, I use a spare layshaft and hub. Even doing it like this, sometimes it takes a bit of fiddling to getting it installed.

Penton Talk / 2023 Vintage 1000 Utah
May 31, 2023, 07:59:54 AM
Tomorrow is the day four of us will leave for another grand adventure. Two Penton and two Honda motorcycles are being loaded up. Merv from New Jersey is arriving this afternoon to join brother Randy, son in law Nick, and yours truly to do five 200 mile days in the sand and rocks of Utah. Merv is on a XL250, Randy a Champion framed XL350, Nick on a Six Days and me on my trusty Berkshire. Nick has just completed his first Penton and will be breaking it in properly. Other than a couple quick trips around the block, he has never been on one of John's best. It will be interesting to hear what he thinks after five hard days in the saddle.

The Vintage 1000 starts next Monday with a riders meeting and roll chart prep Sunday evening. Salt Lake City is the jumping off point, with the trail heading south in a big loop, ending back at the start. Twenty five riders signed up plus support crew, trailer of shame, and sweep rider Adam. Speed Deluxe out of Chattanooga, TN puts these events together several times each year. Their information can be found on a web site if anyone is interested.

I will do my best to keep up with this post daily.

Ride it out of the crate.
