Penton Talk / PVL or Powerdynamo?
February 14, 2017, 05:40:17 PM
Thanks Alan! So go with the DC system and just run a condenser (or maybe a small battery as an option). Or did you just go with the AC system?

I just looked and I assume you sell just the AC system?

What was the asking price? I am just trying to keep an eye on the values. There is an unrestored 1979 250 on ebay now with an $1800 start. Thanks for any help.

Dale, Please keep posting ANY penton/older KTM you find. The comments and wealth of information from the members is priceless for us just getting into the hobby. The 1979 250 I bought was just because I liked the bike. I had no real idea what I was getting. Ended up being very original and nice and I paid a bit too much for it but that is what I wanted. You are not forcing or leading anyone, just showing what is available and I really appreciate it.

Alan, Thanks for the reply. The owner was very picky with this bike and it should be fine but I will take a look. Is there a special water additive, treatment or coating I can use? Haven't figured what to do with it yet, I just like standing in the garage looking at them mostly! [8)]

I found this on their website: "Research octane number is 116; motor octane number is 104 (R+M)/2 is 110 Reid Vapor Pressure is 6.6psi. Not Oxygenated and is not dyed." Basically they are using a lead substitute to get the 110 octane numbers. It isn't effected by sunlight like lead. I hope it doesn't attack my fiberglass tank? Guess we will find out!

Dan, I seem to at least be in the ballpark. I don't mind mixing the gas as both stations are easy to get to and on the way home from work. I will give it a "Rudder Run" this weekend. Thanks for your reply!

Good point on the VIN numbers. My 1979 which as far as I know is mostly original. Has a January 79' frame date (with a 1978 code motor) and the swingarm mounted kick stand. The swingarm is aluminum and I have noticed both alum and steel swingarms on 1979 bikes. Seems like a good chance the craigslist bike is a 1980. Not that it matters a bunch just trying to learn all I can about these bikes.

Well, it's still for sale. Looks like it might be a lot closer to a thousand dollar bike than the asking price. Anybody called on it? I would love to get it. I just have too many interests tying up my spending cash.

Toolsurfer, I appreciate you strengthening my point a little. Shouldn't take to long to sell with that endorsement and I hope somebody here gets it. Thanks for the response and sorry for talking behind your back. ;) These bikes are so cool!

Mike, Thanks for the input. I guess I have looked through thousands of bikes in the area and $1000 is the going price for a rough running Yamaha DT or Suzuki TM and I didn't want to ride them when they were new! To me the REAL enduro motorcycles should have more value. Lets just keep that secret with in these walls. :)

Kip, I think I would split the difference between 1k and asking price but I would really like to know why you put that number on it? Are you seeing non-stock items, Just overall condition, or the fact to it has not run in a while and would require a bunch of work? I am just getting into these bikes and honestly would like to learn from the guys who know.

Penton Talk / KTM ID question
April 19, 2015, 10:36:46 AM
New POG member here with a million questions, looking to revive a seven year old thread! First, I cannot express how great it is to have a group of people this dedicated to these awesome bikes.

I found a 1979 KTM 250 GS80 locally in good (I think original) condition. The frame is 901 01923 (1979 January) and 8-5420764 (1978 250cc) is it possible the 78 engine would be put in an early 79 bike? Also, the wiring was a little funky. I have the "user's handbook" with a wiring diagram but does anyone have photos or resources to switches, connectors, wires, etc. Thanks for any help.

Jeff

Hey guys. I have my darn nice classic KTM up for sale. The price I am asking is quite a bit less than I have into it but I'll listen to serious offers (especially if your a POG brother). Thanks, -Jeff
