Wanted / For Sale / For Sale: a pair of 125's
October 05, 2004, 09:53:00 AM
Hi Dale,
good to hear from you.
I only raced two events at Pacific Raceways in Seattle, and never made it out to Spokane this year. I'm finding I have too many other projects, and not enough time or money to continue to race, so the bikes are up for sale.

Thanks Thom :)
Do you live in Seattle too? Very cool. Thanks for the offer. If any one is interested in more info about these bikes, I would be glad to provide it. My email is [email protected]

Hello Ron,
yes, that is correct, I finished third overall for the season in the 250 vintage class. The majority of the competition ride Honda CB/CL 160cc  and 175cc twins.

Thanks Karen!
And Thanks also are due to John Durrill, Dale Walter (DEEK) and Allen Buhner for all their help, expertise and parts resources which all added up to a very successful season of pavement racing for me. And of course, thanks to all of you that have shown an interest in my racing program and given me encouragement.

John, Doug, and the group,
I inserted an image into my previous message (10/16/2003 : 6:53:42 PM)  Am I the only one that sees it??[?]?? (que up Twilight Zone sound track)
>snip<

I've since found out from the system administrator that we are not allowed to post embedded images. I don't see it any more. I'm cured.[8D]

>snip<

I also sent a couple more pictures to the system administrator last night too.  The new format for the news group is really cool!

John, thank you. I'm looking forward to it:) I wish I could have made the reunion ride.

Just to mess with my competitors heads, I put yellow Honda wings on my Penton tank with the words..."Honda-Ha!"  ...they're all on Honda CB160 and 175 twins. I'm having way more fun than a 54 year old should be allowed!!!

Dale, no, the last one was here in Seattle, but the one I described that I DNF'd due to too much fuel was in Spokane...(I had planned to contact you but all my planning was hectic and last minute...sorry I missed you).... I have learned to put a thin ring of Yamabond (grey sealant) around the magneto cover and it works fantasticly, to keep water out of the magneto. I also learned to not use a foam sock  air filter on the carb  because tend to soak up a lot of rain and kill the fire (I only have a screen covering the opening to keep the birds out)  So my racer is finally Pacific Northwest weather tight this year...but...ok, ok,...I won't keep you guys in suspense any longer...In the first heat, I was a half second off the starting flag and had to pass two guys to take the lead, and narrowly kept it through the final laps as I missed a shift on the final leg, and saw the wheel of my nemesis just as I found the gear and accelerated out of his reach for the checker. The second heat was another epic battle, but my start was flawless, in fact my Penton did a terrific power wheelie as  the flag dropped, which, I was told, really syched out the guys on either side of me on the  grid...I had a great battle with the points leader, passing, and then being passed several times, before finally out-accelerating him at the exit of a turn which leads to an uphill chicane. My net result for the weekend: Two first place finishes, which will put me back on the podium in third place.:D Heck ya ...<<< I KICKED BUTT!!!>>>
I have a picture I want to post...how can I do that?

hehehe...:D
(it is GREAT to know I have such loyal fans...thanks you guys) (Ron, I don't know how yet, but I'll try that idea soon).
Well, earlier this year there were a few ups and downs...in fact, I tasted the pavement twice this year, as I learned the limits of Avon tyre traction, and maximum lean angle, at speed.  In July and August,  I had accumulated enough points to hold a 3rd place podium spot for the 250 vintage class standings, but then slid back to 5th overall after two DNF's in subsequent races... crashed out of one  while trying to overtake the 2nd place (and consistently faster) Michael Bateman. Then in the next race, I failed to finish when I went the wrong way in selecting a jet size (It was acting lean, by surging and losing power at WFO, but ran worse when I put a fatter jet in.) With only one race to go, (October 12) and two fast guys with more points than I had already between me and the podium, I needed to win, and they had to finish way back in the pack!!!...

Hi John,
is the D cylinder the one with the extra transfer ports? I considered that. pretty pricy though. Yes, please do send the Rotax (air cooled engine) specs.
Thanks for the help.  Say hello and good luck to Martjin for me, in his race season.
Dave.

John,  I'm afraid I can't justify it to the bank (the Misses.)
But I appreciate your efforts immensely.

Penton Talk / Road Race Report Round 2 (long)
June 05, 2003, 07:48:40 PM
John,
thanks for the info from  Martijn. Yes, I got the email you sent to my n7bqv address.
I'm looking forward to making those mods next off-season. Meanwhile, does anybody have an internal rotor PVL they want to sell?
Also, who would be interested in straight cut primary gears? What would be an acceptable cost? I don't think we would need to run those expensive ($40 each)  stock main bearings and could replace them with standard SKF or Timpkin ball races, since there wouldn't be any side thrust.  Any machinist with the proper tools could make them. I think $100 per set would be well spent don't you guys?

Penton Talk / Road Race Report Round 2 (long)

Thanks John,
yes it makes sense, but wouldn't that limit my top speed more than backing off of the throttle? I would rather do porting or pipe modifications to get a higher power peak if that were the case...I have been told that the Sachs engine has loads of power to be released by some careful metal removal...but that costs money, and I can't do it meself!
Dave H.

Dave,
try going up one tooth in the back, at a time on that track. lots of engines will rev way past their peak power and acctualy go slower as you continue to rev out in the same gear.
sounds like your power peak is  at some lower point in the rpm's your gearing will let the engine rev to.
 Make sense?
John D.

Sponsors needed...
I would like to buy, beg, borrow or steal an internal rotor PVL ignition, and straight cut primary gears for my Penton-Fichtel-Sachs 125 road racer. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] with any leads. Thanks,

Penton Talk / Crankcase transfer port opening
April 24, 2003, 09:29:37 PM
I think the reason for 2 port-ways in place  of the original one, is to increase the fuel/air charge velocity, which occurs because you have aproximately the same volume as before, now flowing through smaller pipelines...the Bernouli effect (which I am not qualified to adequately explain, but like my physics professor always told us..."it's in the book...look it up"
