Penton Talk / First ride

Paul-
Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if I met Mr. Penton or not at Mid-O. I am located on the coast in NJ, so I don't make it to Ohio often. It is a long haul (although there were a lot of Pentons for sale at the Mid-O, so if I am still looking for a second bike, I will be headed there again).

Regarding my son, he is an admirer of the early Elsinore Hondas. I will be be drawing his attention to the Penton family for many reasons, not the least of it is the presence of dedicated enthusiasts such as yourself.

Penton Talk / Need Shocks for 74 250HS
January 08, 2017, 07:09:50 PM
Happy New Year, All!

I would like to replace the original shocks on my HS. Does anyone have any recommendations on which to buy? A friend has recommended that I buy the Betor MX units, which list for $128 on the Betor website.

I weigh 210 pounds, and I won't be racing the bike. I am mostly riding in woods and trails in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I don't need to break the bank, just soften the bumps.

Also, does anyone know the shock mounting bolt diameter- is it 10 or 12mm?

Thank you.

I took my 250 HS out for my first ride yesterday, I ride old british twin street bikes, and also road race an MGB, but the Penton was a fantastic experience unto itself. I can't believe how much power it makes. It is a blast to ride.

I spoke to a a couple of guys at the POG tent at Mid-Ohio, what a nice group of folks. I also appreciate the pleasant demeanor of folks here on the discussion board.

As a kid almost 40 years ago, I dreamed of owning and riding a dirt bike, The walls of my room were papered with ripped out pages of bikes from Cycle magazine- mostly RM Suzukis. In the early 80s, I owned a Bultaco Alpina that I rode once, and when the chain bunched up in the case and jammed, I thought the engine was seized, and I just gave it away- I was just a kid, and didn't know any better. A lot bikes and cars have passed thru my hands since then, some that people would regret selling. The only one I regretted letting slip was the Bultaco. By chance, the Penton fall into my lap in July. I am impressed with the bike, and I am looking forward to riding as often as I can. I will probably be looking for another 250 for my son in the near future.

I have decided to keep and ride my  74 250 HS and need to purchase replacement chain and sprockets for it.

I am a novice rider. I will be doing mild weekend warrior riding, nothing serious.

Can anyone recommend sprocket sizes and chain size and length, and a source?

Also looking for a headlight, and a chain tensioner/brake stay.

Thank you

You it the fastest people on a Penton.

Nice original Penton Hare Scrambler 250.  $3500

If you want to win a vintage race, this is the bike you are going to do it on.

There is no title for this bike. Repeat, no title.

Last registered in NY in 1975. This bike has seen some use, but it is still very presentable, and can be ridden and enjoyed as it is.
New Top End

New Fenders

New Number Plate

35mm Ceriani Forks (fork stanchions in excellent condition)

Six Speed Transmission

Bike starts on first kick and runs very strong

Gearbox shifts through all gears properly

Factory tool rack

Leather tool bag (nice shape)

Seat in excellent shape

The list of parts it will need to be ready to roll is short- and relatively inexpensive.

Missing the skid plate

Kill switch not working

Needs taillight

Needs tires

No title.

I was just at the Mid Ohio swap meet, and I can tell you that I did not see any unrestored Pentons this nice. I saw one Hare Scrambler, for a little less money, but nowhere near as nice as this one.

If you have a hankering to go run enduros or scrambles, this is a nice example of a correct bike that will get you there with a minimum of effort. This bike presents well, and is a wheelie machine.

I will gladly cooperate with shipping companies, but buyer is responsible for all shipping costs and arrangements.
