What style seats do you have covers for?  I have a 72 Six Days that is the short-low style which had a Penton stencil on the back (first pic on the left) and a 73 that I think is the short tall style with a Penton stencil at the top and a smaller KTM under it on the back (pix on the middle and right)....

Thanks in advance.

Penton Talk / Nice score!

Hey Kurt,

I know this is an old thread, but just had to jump in.  First bike I ever rode (1974) was a 72 Six Days my uncle bought from Charlie Hildebrand at Cape Ann in Beverly. You must have ridden that Hodaka at Cherry Hill -- what about the Ipswich golf course?  Soooo many great memories -- some of the best were just riding in the woods after school.  Have restored a bunch of old bikes over the years (tend to gravitate to '70s bikes -- Bonneville, CB500, Moto Guzzi 850T3, GT550, RD350, T250, DT250, DT360...), and finally picked up a Six Days project a couple of years ago. My kids are pushing me to get it back together this winter...

Dan -- good idea, checked piston clearance last night, was just a little beyond spec.

So just now found and bought a Wiseco 168P8 (forged piston .080) on eBay.

Ron -- will PM you about sleeve.

Thanks everyone!  Looking forward to reliving my youth this spring.

Thanks Mike.  What's the consensus here on one ring vs. two?

Thanks for the quick responses Larry and Dan -- sounds like 60mm is not an option.  Will measure the piston clearance and continue the search for 56.00 mm piston...

Thanks Kip and Kevin! Very helpful.

Rebuilding my "new" '72 Penton Six Days and checked the ring gap -- it's at the limit (.015) so was thinking it make sense to go up a size.  But the piston, which is marked Mahle on the wristpin boss and ELKO on the dome, is also marked 55.75 (twice) -- see picture.  Is it possible to get a 60.00 mm piston for this cylinder? Looks like there's still some (?!?) meat left on the liner, but a quick scan of previous posts here indicates I may be at the bore limit.  Which may explain why Al B has 125 pistons in smaller sizes only.  Also sounds like his 60.00 mm piston for the 152 engines is not a direct/easy fit for the Six Days, based on other posts here.  I have a PM into member Crazy Jake, who indicated he has pistons in the size I need in a previous thread.  Thanks in advance for any guidance on best next steps.  Plan for bike is to be a rider, maybe a vintage enduro or two, but mostly just light trail riding.

Greetings from a newbie.  Just picked up my "first" Penton, a 72 Six Day -- just like the bike my uncle owned and the first motorcycle I ever rode (back in 1973), before getting my own 75 CR125 and racing MX.  Bike is a little rough (looks better in pic), but pretty complete (if a little non-stock: front rim is DID aluminum, right sidecover is from 74+, rear shocks are Mulholland, etc.). A little gas/oil and it started no problem. Current plan is to get running as is, eventually paint frame, recover seat, install Petty front and rear lights (thanks Al B for the tip!) and register for road, but leave tank, sidecovers as is.  Maybe run a vintage hare scramble or two.  (Great series here in New England.)

Couple of Qs - Can I hook up lights to existing wiring or should I just run a small 12v battery in a total-loss system? Anyone ever run Kenda K270 dual sports on a Penton? Better road ride than full knobbies? Feels like sacrilege but will have to spend a fair amount of time on roads around here (North of Boston, MA) to jump on and off trails in the woods. I know, I know, so did the ISDT boys back in the day -- which may be my answer.

Btw, got one fork leg straightened (and then realized I needed to do the other after putting it all back together!) at a local machine shop run by a couple of brothers that used to be a Penton dealer (Competition Cycles in Wilmington, MA -- also sold Montesa, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, Norton, Dalesman). Told me John Penton slept at their Mom's house when he was travelling to dealers training them on how to repair bikes!
