Thanks Gentlemen,

I'll be trying a few of these suggestions tonight.

@Carl Hill - What would be the best way to get that fly wheel out without pulling the engine out of the frame, rather not have to do that if I can void it. I'll check the exhaust first, that shouldn't take too long.

@wfopete - Better plan than a pull start since I happen to have a big hill handy. I'll give that a go if it wont fire conventionally.

@Jason Rowland - The honda has been dually scolded and is under a cover now in time out. I have swapped between 3 different plugs, 2 NGK and one champion. One for eh NGk's was the one it was running with when I put it away. I did check out the kill switch as well, and id not find a fault, and ruled it out (possibly incorrectly) with free spark occurring. What would be the best way to check that and clean the magnets? Electrical is my weak point

@ALB- I went through the carb and soaked, then sprayed out all the needles and orifices when I cleaned it. The honda had a lot of jet issues, so I made sure they were free and clear on this one.

@ Dennis DeGonia -  I believe it is, but I'll check and reset it tonight. What position do you recommend?

Thanks again guys!

Penton Talk / 75 Penton Air Filter Fitment
May 09, 2018, 02:01:40 PM
The air box and cover are plastic.

Thanks for the dimensions Rob, I will measure mine this evening. I have placed the bare cage on the protrusion in the air box, and it seems to fit all the way down, but I will double check. Would the suggestion then be to slightly compress the cage until ti will fit, with the element installed, under the cover?

I believe I do, It was the one my uncle and with the bike. it was not installed when I picked it up from him, and its the only Penton he's had since 1976. I will get pictures tonight though and post them up. There's not an extra spacer between the air box cover and the airbag body I'm possibly missing is there?

Thanks Dan, Dale, and Dave for your advice on this. I have pulled the carb back off the bike, and will be going through and checking and replacing jets and needles. While I have it off, I have wanted to take a look at the slide, as I had read on several other posts about slide wear. The reference I keep hearing is that if it has a "smiley face" it is time to replace it. I have no idea what this would actually look like, as I advent been able to find pictures of it.

I have uploaded several pictures of the slide, and hope you might be able to tell me if it has this "smiley face" and if it is time to replace it.

Thanks,
Lance

Hey guys, thanks for the responses! I figured they were rare when I couldn't find any pictures of them. To be honest, I wasn't sure they were original either until now.

Dan- Interestingly enough, mine does still have that bracket on the tank, and I had no Idea what it was for, so that clears up that mystery, thank you.

Cal- Thats what I was hoping, someone might be interested in selling one or a set that they had laying around. If you could send over some photos and details on how you made yours, especially re-slugging a cut down control cable, I'd be very appreciative, as that may be the way I end up having to go. My email is [email protected]

On a side not, were the unique to the 250 that year, or were they generally used on 75 and later models?

Thanks,
Lance

So I hadn't fired up the Penton in about a year due to getting distracted by Honda I was building (bad I know) but I had winterized it with Sta-bil and have been using non-ethanol gas.

I put in a new spark plug and disassembled and cleaned the carb, and the bike wouldn't fire. I put in all fresh gas as well.

I checked spark on the frame and on the engine fins, and its good. I made sure the float bowl was full and sprayed some starting ether in the air box and cylinder, still won't start.

I added a little gas to the cylinder, as the plug has been fairly dry, still won't start.

I've tried choke on and off, throttle on and off, and all combinations in between, and still won't start.

I'm at my wits end on this one. Compression is good, and kick is firm. Any help would be very appreciated!

Thanks

Penton Talk / 1975 Penton 250 Brake Shoes
May 13, 2018, 05:35:25 PM
So as part of my test ride on the Penton, I found out the brakes didn't really work. Made things very fun.

I have the brakes pulled apart and have added pictures of the part numbers here. Any idea what currently produced brake shoes will fit in the bike? I need to replace front and rear.

Penton Talk / 75 Penton Air Filter Fitment
May 08, 2018, 11:22:09 AM
So I recently got in the correct twin-air filter for my 1975 250, and fitted the air filter cage into it. I see how it mont on the boss on the side of the air box (or at least appears to) but when mounted, it sits too tall to allow the air box cover to be reattached. Any help would be appreciated.

Penton Talk / '75 HS Bing 54 will not idle

I know there has been a fair amount of coverage of this type of issue on the forum, but there are still a few things I need cleared up.

The bike kicks over without an issue on the 3-4th kick and revs nicely, if a bit tinny. Problem is, it will not idle at all. It slowly revs down to where an idle would be, then keeps going down until it shuts off. I have tried adjusting the screws until I'm blue in the face but cant seem to find a spot at which it will idle.

I replaced all seals and gaskets on the carb, although there does seem to be gas still getting out of it somewhere as there is some gas pooling on top of the engine case.

Also what should the jets and needle be for this carb? I have read 3-4 different sizes for the same carb on POG, and before I order a new set, I want to make sure they are right.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Lance

Hello,

I recently started restoration on my a 1975 Hare Scrambler that had belonged to my Uncle. I have it running now, and am just looking for bits and bobs to finish it out. Chief among them at the moment is an original tank strap. I have seen the leather variety, but this one has the two rubber coated spring straps. I have both, but one has come unwound and will need replacement.

Thanks,
Lance
