I am selling most of my motorcycle collection. Due to work and a few health issues, I no longer have time to take care of and enjoy all of my motorcycles.

I spent a few years bringing this bike back to life. I had a lot of help from the great folks in this group. It is not all original. I had to buy some reproduction parts. I currently have a Mikuni carb on the bike. It runs and starts great. I have a Bing carb and Husky style air filter that will go with it. Any steeltanker spare parts that I have go with the bike (filters, cables, etc.). I installed a new seat pan, foam, and cover. New tires, chain, and sprockets. New grips. Magura ISDT covers and cable adjustors. Six bolt rear hub. New piston and rings. Started the bike a few days ago on third kick after sitting for two months.

After years of heckling from Bill Ryburn about not getting this bike running, I rode this bike at Barber last year with Bill. We got a lot of comments with the two steeltankers on the starting line. Bill went down on the first lap. I ended up riding a few laps. The bike rode great.

As you know, this bike was in one of the first containers of Pentons to America. This is a very low number Penton steeltanker. Bike number V0172. I saved it and got it back together. Now, it's your turn to enjoy it.

$5,000. Bill of sale only. Not titled. If you are interested in the bike, please let me know.

Thanks for looking.

Penton Racing Talk / Mikuni Conversion for Steel Tanker
December 23, 2023, 11:46:44 PM
Okay. I realize that the title is consider heresy by some, but I would like to know if anyone has put a mikuni on a steel tanker.

I'm having a horrible time finding a working Bing. I put a mikuni on both a Berkie and Six Day. Both ran great.

I hate to see a steel tanker not running because of the lack of a Bing carb.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

John

Update on the long, slow process of trying to save the 1968 steel tanker.

I'm down to the carb. I need a good working 27mm Bing carb.

If anyone knows where I can get one, please let me know.

Much appreciated.

Merry Christmas!

Penton Talk / 1977 MC5 Suspension Travel
September 10, 2023, 10:30:41 PM
I've read several conflicting  things about the suspension travel for a 1977 MC5 with the Marzocchi forks and shocks.

How much travel did these bikes come with stock?

Thanks,

John

Penton Talk / Re: Clarke Gas Tank for 1977 MC-5 Frame
September 10, 2023, 07:23:45 PM
Darn. I wish that I had seen this. I ordered one from Clarke. It's on the slow boat from China.

For future reference, how much do you want for it?

Thanks,

John

Good morning.

Will the Clarke KTM MC-5 gas tanks fit a 1977 Penton MC-5 frame?

Wanted / For Sale / Wanted - Clutch Cable Fitting
August 26, 2023, 08:02:04 PM
I'm looking for the clutch cable fitting (52.02.057.000) for my 1977 175 GS6 engine. This is the cam that the clutch cable goes through on the actuating arm on the engine.

If anyone has one, please let me know. Trying to get the bike ready for Hayes Farm.

Thanks,

John

Skiracer,

I'm using the OEM alloy air box. I have the air boot from Al (52-06-026-500). The carb side of the air boot is 67mm inside diameter.

Are you using a different air boot and/or airbox with a 57mm bell that's hard to get the boot on?

We've hit a couple of snags with the bike. Had to get some parts from Al. I was waiting to see how things worked out before investing the money in the carb. After a few issues were fixed, looks like the engine has some life left in it. I'm going to order the carb this week. My hope is to have the bike ready to ride at Hayes Farm in early October. By then, hopefully, the renewed bike and my renewed knees will be up to doing a few laps.

Quote from: johnbowman on May 13, 2023, 10:09:11 PMAwesome! Thanks for the details. That's exactly what I needed. I'm just going to get one from Lectron using those specs.

Thanks for taking the time to help! I really appreciate it.

John, be sure to measure the airbox boot before ordering the carb.  My connection to the carb is real tight, you might want to reduce the inlet bell a bit (a couple of mm) How tight? I have to stretch the boot to get it on the carb instead  of it just slipping on.  Your call.  Glad to be able to help.  Just paying it forward from all the help I have gotten in the past from others.

Sounds good. I think that I'll just take it down 1mm on the inlet side. Even 1mm will make a big difference. I'm about to call Lectron now. Thanks for your help.

Quote from: skiracer on May 10, 2023, 07:50:20 AMJohn, Are you asking what the original Lectron specs were, or, are you asking about a new Lectron carb?  If you are asking about a new one, the factory can build the intake bell to match the rubber boot on your airbox.  The motor side will be the standard 40mm.  They will also set up the carb to with the proper metering rod, and have the length pre-set for you.  My experience is the rod length is usally within a 1/2 turn of where I wanted it to be. The factory has some great people working for them and are always helpful whenever I called with a question or an issue.

Thanks. I called Lectron yesterday. They were really helpful. They said that I needed the dimensions and they would make me a carb. I agree with you on the new vs. used. Probably better to just get a new one.

The bike is still in pieces. I have the Lectron boot for the air box. I can measure the spigot outside diameter and the airbox boot inside diameter. Since I don't have a carb, I can't get the carb length. I know that it just has to be close, but I don't know what close is on the overall length.

Do you know the total length of your 34mm carb?
