I'm selling whole or parting out a 1976 or 77 Penton / KTM 250 MC5, frame number 550 02923 and engine number 6-5411263.  The frame is broken in the rear at the seat rail and the crank area has mag rot.  Everything else is in good condition.  I bought this in 2020 right after the pandemic started to restore (it was a rolling chassis and engine was in boxes) and when I disassembled it I found out the frame was broken and the cases had mag rot.

The reason I'm selling is to fund a new Lectron Billetron carb for my 2012 KTM 200 XC-W as well as a couple other items like radiator guards, etc. and possibly having the 200 lowered an inch or so.

I'd rather sell it all to one person, so I'm asking $1000 for all (if you want the frame and cases, those go with it too).  If it all doesn't sell to one person by Sunday morning, I'll part out using the prices below (in which case, if you are interested in a part, please text me at 412 779-8952 and I'll take a picture of the part in a day or so and send it to you).

Swing arm - $30

Steve, was that the Modern Cycle article, July 1976 I think, "White Lightning and Wallet Lightening"?  If it was, great, if not, that article might be another great resource for restoration.

Penton Talk / MC125
February 22, 2021, 12:20:52 PM
I bought a used Penton-badged 1976 125 MC5 in October 1978.  It had a a Lectron carb and I liked it a lot.  Of course, I was coming off a 1971 Honda SL 125 with no mods, so it was a huge step up.  I know that Dirt Bike compared it with a Honda CR 125 and liked the CR better.  Then, Modern Cycle (with Rick Siemen at the helm) had some test riders take timed laps on both, and the MC5 was a lot faster.  The thing I remember was that, at least for my MC5, it didn't need to be screaming to get anywhere.

Penton Talk / Dave Mungenast gone eleven years on 9/20
September 25, 2017, 12:30:10 PM
I remember reading a Popular Cycling article about Dave Mungenast in the Spring of 1976, when I was laid up with a broken leg.  It was called "How to be 41, Funny and Fast" - great article.

It looks like there's one for sale in Reno, and the price looks pretty good.

Penton Talk / 125 MC5 timing
October 03, 2016, 04:15:04 PM
I had a 1976 125 MC5 that ran great "back in the day" (bought it used in 1978) - it had a Lectron carb, and an external rotor Motoplat, if that helps.

Penton Talk / 1975 ISDT Qualifier Pictures
August 09, 2016, 11:18:02 AM
FYI - I reread the article last night.  It was in the May 1976 issue of Popular Cycling.  If I read it right, the bike in the article was used in the 1975 ISDT (apparently he used a different bike for the 1975 qualifiers), and was going to be used in the 1976 qualifiers.

Penton Talk / 1975 ISDT Qualifier Pictures

I remember an article from Popular Cycling, I think it was in the Spring of 1976, that had a lot of pictures of Malcolm's 1975 Husky (a 1975 Husky CR 360, I think).  The article had to do with preparation for motorcycles.  If I remember correctly, there was black paint with the number "252" on the motorcycle a couple of places.  I also remember him saying something along the lines of he used 1 through 4 CR gears, and 5 through 6 WR gears.  I hope this helps.
