Penton Talk / Penton Manuals on CD
April 04, 2005, 05:19:22 PM
Well the manuals project is going well.  A little glitch two weeks ago when a friend turned me on to some fantastic new software that is going to make this look first rate - just like the bikes.  The only thing is, I was 95% complete with the scanning (over 20 manuals) and had to start all over because what has been done couldn't be converted.  It's under control and I expect their release at Vintage Days in July.  It's still up in the air how they're to be formatted - all bikes in a set, or model specific.  Either way they'll be PDF, indexed and hopefully with a special treat that all will enjoy.

I wish to give a special thanks to Al (who will probably never see this) who without his assistance and his manuals none of this would be possible and to Dane for his input and to all others who have emailed me with their comments and suggestions.  Thanks!

Penton Talk / Home Page Photo Quiz - April 2005
April 04, 2005, 03:35:56 AM
Four bolt rear sprocket, short seat, shouldered alloy rims, lack of sunburst head, fork boots, tank lettering.  In my novice opinion I'd say the bike is a 68. And from the looks of it, it does look like the guy on the left is making a personal pit stop and it looks like the three people watching him were more interested in what he was doing than watching the bike go wizzing by. (no pun intended)

Penton Talk / Steel Tanker restoration

Thanks Kip, Rod and Brian.  These are very helpful tips for me.  Kip, are you saying that a good welder should be able to weld the case without splitting them?  Thanks!

Penton Talk / Head differences
March 30, 2005, 10:45:35 PM
Lew, The 10/72 Fichtel & Sachs Repair Instructions No. 336.8 E/4 lists the cylinder and head on Jerry Erickson 152cc Wassell as the type used on the 1251/5 B NHW-Military.  It is an aluminum cylinder and head.  If you look on page 2 of Featured Bikes "Owner Unknown" (top row 4th from the right) the Wassell with the shiny aluminum tank has the same cylinder and head. The picture I have is identical.  But I'm probably way off.  You'll soon hear I hope!

Chris, ditto on the welcome.  Did you look at the Production Year Guide listed on the home page.  Check it out.  You may also wish to check out the Search feature above - it's very powerful and will probably bring you a few answers.  You'll most likely get a bunch of responses to your query - sit tight, but read the board as much as you can.  There is some very interesting stuff that you can learn a lot from.  And don't be afraid to ask what you may think is a stupid or obvious question - I do it all the time and these good natured folks always come up with my answer!  Just watch me! Wanted / For Sale / Lathe & Milling machine in MA
March 24, 2005, 11:52:08 AM
Both of these machines are gems and have been used exclusively for the fabrication of motorcycle and go-kart parts for the past 10 years or so.  Yes, the quick change gear-box and it's size make this a really desirable machine.  I believe he has a box with over 80 gear cutters that he may be willing to throw in with the Hardinge.

How about slapping that Penton Owners Group decal in the back window.  That ought to be worth a, "I see you're a member of the Penton Owners Group ...okay, I'll let you go with just a warning this time."

Well, in a perfect world this may work - not in Plainville![^]

Tom's right Doug.  I'd be willing to bet my steel tanker that you didn't even have to reference anything except your memory to teach us that golden morsel.
