Penton Talk / Bikes that rocked
August 22, 2003, 05:42:14 PM
Mike -

Yeeup, back in the "day", summer of '73...Irwindale Raceway, So. Cal.. the "mettco" pentons ruled night mx with McDougal, LaPorte,& Chuck Bower on them..

Awesome looking bikes..very fast..not even the elsinores could keep up with them...

It was quite a time to be 14 and racing 125 int. on a husky, and have them lap you when the classes were run together..

Those were the Friday nites I remember best.

Class of '74

Well put. You can't put a price on fun, and its a therapy only we can understand..My neighbors look at my pretty vintage bikes as "toys", don't realize what they do for me in terms of a time gone by, that is fondly remembered. Some people drink, some shop, some fool around. I ride vintage bikes.

Well...

I too got caught up in the restoration game, spent waay too much for a thrashed 125 husky, that I wound up having to completely re-do..spent twice (easily) what it is worth to make it right..then I turn around and buy one already done, just like mine, for 1350.00..I learned my lesson..since restoration is not my forte, I'll buy them already redone, and go have fun..I know some derive pleasure from the rebuilding process, and some from racing them..I'll stick to what I know and do best..Anyone who does this restoration stuff for profit is either very saavy, or deluded..I know some make a profit, but its hard to do..it seems some can do a "race restoration", and keep it relatively inexpensive..but when you're doing a show or new cond restoration, it gets waay expensive and time consuming, neither of which you will be compensated for, in my limited opinion..but who does this vintage stuff for profit anyway?? this is therapy for me..and alot cheaper than a psychiatrist..

Penton Talk / Sachs Pentons in 125 Sportsman Class
June 23, 2003, 05:04:01 PM
Hey Glenn -

Just remember...ride it like you stole it, and momentum is your friend..no time to brake and accelerate..better to just pin it..you won't believe the smile on your mug! What amazes me is how many fast guys there are over the age of 40..Forrest Waldron - 50 something..Gene Fetty - also 50 something..I feel like the youngster at 44..and these guys ride like theres no tomorrow.

Hey All -

I've raced and won the sportsman 125 int class on my Penton a couple of times..The hillier and/or softer the soil, the better your chances..they kill me on hard, flat ground..but if theres hills....

Wanted / For Sale / 125 six day on Ebay
June 16, 2003, 04:49:42 PM
Hey All -

I spoke to him after he sold it, said he lost a couple hundred, so I'm guessing he got somewhere around 2,000 for it..It really is a nice bike, very fast, ported to the "mettco" specs that Carl Cranke put out in an old Penton service bulletin. It would pull my race Penton, but not my 125 Husky..My Husky is F A S T..I weigh 230, and can pull holeshots on it..And no, its not a 175..really..

Wanted / For Sale / 125 six day on Ebay
June 13, 2003, 04:45:16 PM
Hey All...

That was my back up bike that a buddy restored for me. I sold it, and the new owner decided to go another direction, so he sold it. It is a very nice race ready bike. I had it here for sale back in March. Wish one of you had snapped it up.

I recognize the living room..

I race AHRMA N/W region on mine, won title last yr, and first 3 events this yr, classic 125 int. Its too pretty to crash, so I don't! It runs & shifts perfect!

Penton Talk / Six-Day loading up problem HELP!
February 19, 2003, 05:37:18 PM
My 125 Husky did the exact same thing. It was a sticking float needle. I suggest a carb rebuild from Doug, and your problem should go away.
