Penton Talk / Plastic M20 bearings pros / cons?
August 02, 2002, 12:47:22 PM
re; Klotz and synthetics,,many moons ago an old motorcycle mechanic told me synthetics "bean oil" are only good for the cart guys who race every week and tear down the motors regularly,.,for the dirt bike guys who ride and park them for longer periods of time always use a petroleum based oil.,.the bean oils have zero rust prevention in them and you all know what condensation does to metal..for what its worth!

Penton Talk / not right yet, but closer

I assume you have oil in the clutch side case and the seal is good..if the clutch seal is bad it will suck the oil out of the tranny and then suck air next which will make it over-rev..also check the intake manifold for a cracked stem and check the clamp on the bing to make sure its tight and you can't rotate the carb..for what its worth!

Penton Talk / Electrical woes...
May 21, 2002, 06:37:18 PM
I have spliced a motoplat coil wire and it worked fine..I shaved back about a quarter inch on both..then put a piece of heat shrink tubing about 3" long on..soldered the wires together and then slid the tubing over and heated it for a tight secure fit and it worked ok.

Wanted / For Sale / Bing Carb Rebuild
May 20, 2002, 04:19:12 PM
I would start with replacing the top coil for a start. I had the same problem with my penton. It would start always..but sometimes rev clean and then out of the blue load up like it was flooding..after changing the dang crank seals(thought it was sometimes sucking oil from the tranny) I put another top coil on and voila..runs like a bear.

Penton Talk / '76 250 Sprocket Removal
March 27, 2002, 08:11:11 PM
I have two methods..1.put the chain on and put a long bolt down thru the links behind the sprocket..sort of makes a better way to hold it..also 2. a pair of those clamp style vice grips work real good..just clamp them down in the teeth where the chain goes..the pinch end is narrow enough to go right into between the teeth..works great!

Penton Talk / Tire size selection
March 18, 2002, 02:21:17 PM
I would worry more about the tire clearing the chain then the hook up..last time I mounted a 5.30 on a pre-80 bike the chain chewed the knobs off it!

Penton Talk / Motoplat applications
March 15, 2002, 03:47:49 PM
I have found that the red lead motoplat top frame coils will work on all motoplats..the black lead units will only work on stators that had black lead coils..something about where the diode is..best guy around on motoplat knowledge is Dane at HIPoint (PVL gang now)
A question to all:  Is the Motoplat model stator and top coil for the Sachs engines interchangable with the stator and top coil for the KTM engines?  The part number is slightly different for the complete unit, but does that just relate to the rotor?

Penton Talk / I NEED HELP!!! 125cc six days
March 02, 2002, 09:05:28 PM
couple things..you can remove the tickler but its not simple..you need a dremel to take the little bump off the shaft and it will fly out(spring pressure) but you will have to drill it put a tiny washer and cotter pin to put it back or you can put it in and squeeze score it with a pair of cutting pliers and most times it will stay..also if its been sitting in a barn check the pipe for a rats nest..it will shut the bike down real bad if its full of crap..I have bought more than one bike for peanuts because it didn't run worth a crap..I would take the silencer etc out and start it up and watch the fireworks of crap blow out the end of the pipe..for what its worth!

Penton Talk / '72 Jackpiner Front Wheel Bearing
March 01, 2002, 11:13:47 PM
when ever I put in a wheel bearing I freeze the bearing for about an hour or so and then take a propane torch and gently heat the entire hub area slowly..then the bearing will literally drop in with no resistance..just let it sit and cool ..if you flip it over while still hot the bearing will fall out..for what its worth!

February 24, 2002, 01:02:44 AM
ps: if you can find an old  Sudco Mikuni Carb and Parts manual its a great help. They show all the old needles and jets and what is the steps of each which makes it easier to dial in since Mikuni made so many variations..I have one if you need some help!
