Penton Talk / Continuing problems with my Penton
September 12, 2003, 11:24:42 AM
Thanks for the responses.  The bike will not idle with the choke on.  The bike has never idled.  I did clean the carb, but I will do it again.  With a larger pilot, the air screw doesn't do anything, which led me to believe that it was too rich.  Does anyone have any experience with Mikunis on 250 pentons?  The carb is mounted at what I feel is an extreme angle forward, do you think that I should adjust the floats differently?  Does anyone have an intake manifold and a 36mm Bing that they want to get rid of?

Thanks for all the responses so far,
Dwayne

Penton Talk / Motoplat problems?
July 16, 2003, 11:58:09 PM
Hi Everyone,
I am in the process of getting another coil to try this out.  I checked my head, it seemed to be torqued to about 7lbs.  The manual that I have says that this is right.  This seems awfully loose, is this correct?
Thanks...Dwayne

Penton Talk / Motoplat problems?
July 16, 2003, 08:21:53 PM
Thanks everyone!  When my engine dies, it's like someone turned the ignition switch off, in other words, it just dies.  It will usually not fire again until the next day.  But like I indicated, it will only run for about 10-15 seconds, and will not even hint of running again until the next day, so I ruled out that it was heat related.  I will check if there is a leak in the head, but it's just mind boggling.  The spark is white as far as I can tell.  I did put in a different spark plug, and had the same results.  I have never encountered a problem like this in my 20 years of riding.  If anyone else can think of anything else, please let me know.  I will check all of these things that you all have suggested.  Thanks again!
Dwayne

Penton Talk / Koni Shocks

Thanks for the information.  I spoke to a technician at Koni today about the seals.  He said that they don't sell parts to the general public.  He also said that the seals that these shocks use are a standard size that is available through suppliers.  He indicated that one could get these seals from a company named McMaster-Carr.  McMaster-Carr does have a website from which you can order stuff.  You just need to know the measurements of the seal that you need.
Thanks...Dwayne

Penton Talk / Continuing problems with my Penton

Hi Everyone,
I have another problem with my 250 Hare Scrambler.  Now that I have a new PVL and the bike will start and run, but it won't idle.  Whoever owned this bike before me replaced the Bing with a 34 mikuni.  The bike runs well above idle, but will die below 1/8 throttle.  I have changed the pilot jet which started with a 30 and is now at 20.  I tried a 17.5 but the bike did not start at all.  With the 20 and above, the idle adjustment screw (works the slide) is all the way in and does nothing.  The air screw does nothing until about 3-4 turns out, then the idle will increase but not much.  The bike is fitted with a 3.0 slide and a leaner than standard needle.  I have not gotten into the needle jet, but that shouldn't affect the idling anyway.  So I am totally baffled.  The plug indicates that it is running a bit rich, and often there is black drool coming out of the exhaust and drips on the engine.  The other jets in the bike are as follows:  200 Main, 2.0 air jet.  Help!
Thanks...Dwayne

Penton Talk / Motoplat problems?
July 16, 2003, 11:39:38 AM
Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my 73 250 Hare Scrambler that I hope someone can help me with.  I have only been able to get it started 4-5  times, and when I do, it dies within 10 or 15 seconds.  When it starts, it will only run at high rpms (not less than 3/4 open throttle, and not able to idle)I have had the Motoplat rebuilt by Vintage Dirtbike in Texas and there appears to be a good spark when I kick it through with the plug out and grounded on the head.  Following the rebuild, I did get it started, but it died as described, and I thought it maybe a carb problem.  It has a 34mm mikuni, and I have have swapped carbs with my cz to check if there was an possibility that it was a carb problem, it started twice, but died in the same manner.  Has anyone had a problem similar to this?  It appears that the Motoplat will kind of work at higher rpms but not at lower ones.  I have cleaned all the contact points with the frame, coil, etc. but have not taken the flywheel off and further cleaned under the mounting plate (although I did so before I remounted the ignition).  Can anyone help me?
I am thinking about buying a PVL, but with the internal flywheel, I don't really want the power characterisics of this motor to change.  Does anyone have any advise as to which flywheel weight to add to get the power as close to stock as possible?
Thanks...Dwayne

Penton Talk / mikuni carb
September 24, 2002, 06:19:31 PM
Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have any experience with Mikuni Carb conversions.  I have acquired a 73 Hare Scrambler with a 34mm Mikuni.  Can anyone give me an idea as to what jets to run?
Thanks...Dwayne

Does anyone know where I can get seals for Koni shocks?  I have a pair of Konis with Poppy bodies and would like to use them, but one of them is leaking.
Thanks...Dwayne

Wanted / For Sale / 73 Penton Hare Scrambler
May 30, 2002, 11:41:36 PM
Hi everyone,
I have recently acquired a 73 Hare Scrambler that I would like to do some fun racing with.  I would like to buy a new pipe and possibly a tank to use while racing rather than using and possibly destroying the original items.  Does anyone know if the Clarke MC5 tank will fit on my bike? Also, does anyone have any experience with the Ace Racing Pipe?  I have also heard that Jemco also makes a pipe.  Does anyone have any experience with this pipe?
Thanks...Dwayne
