April 06, 2003, 10:54:22 PM
Check out my reply to the swingarm finishing question..I have a 10hp 1800 rpm giant commercial polisher but still use vibratory finishing or ball burnishing on most stuff..Ever try to polish a rim on a wheel polisher..Holy Cow!! talk about a crazy task..

Penton Talk / Finish Coating An aluminum Swingarm
April 06, 2003, 10:49:24 PM
Hi!, If you have someone close by who does vibratory finishing that may be a good choice. Also ball burnishing. Both processes help reduce stress risers (potential failure areas) and add strength. It looks like a cheezy polishing job, sorta "scratchy" but shiny. You can coat with a clear engine paint for corosion and chemical protection.

I had contact with Dom some months ago and was under the impression he was going to send me the parts to weld together. We had discussed working together because I am making arms for Hugh's Bulls. I had thought about going into the swingarm business but the tooling cost VS projected short term sales looked like too thin for my small business. I would like to be able to make vintage parts for Penton but I am not at the point yet where I can't afford to do much without someone ordering several pieces of a single item. The vintage market is interesting in that todays cost for prototype parts are way more that the cost of old, used, mass produced parts. Who wants to buy $500.00 swingarms? not me either.

John, I tried your e-mail with no luck. Do you have a drawing program that you can dimension with ? .DXF or .DWG are common extensions. I can dimension the drawings if not.. F

Penton Talk / restoration: do's and don'ts

BITD, you and I are in the same boat my friend. My 77GS6 is completely shot. There has been very few parts that have not needed either replacing or rebuilding. The guys here in POG have been very helpfull and forthcoming with good information. A couple of the guys manufacture repro parts or have a large inventory of used parts and others are very knowledgable with finishing or fabrication. Once you get to work on the bike you may wish to ride/race, much of the beauty of the design is it's function.
