Penton Talk / Bad weather day trivia
January 01, 2013, 10:01:36 PM
I did race Hopetown one time in the early 70's.  It was a blast racing through the western movie set.  I was runnig third with one lap to go, coming up to the mud-hole and the condenser wire my CZ points came off, luckily I stopped about 2 feet before the mud-hole.  As previously stated, it was a western movie set at one time and was owned by Bob Hope at that time.  And "Crash" Corrigan did own it previous to Bob Hope.  Westlake Village is a different area, probably 20-25 miles as the crow flies.  We had a lot of local tracks back then: Indian Dunes, Bay Mare, Muntz Moorpark, Simi Tapo track (Gillebrandt property - forgot the name of the track), Hopetown, Westlake Village. Some of these tracks were short lived, but all were within a total of about a 25-30 mile radius of Simi Valley.

Great event.  I hope pictures become available.  A couple of Berkshires, A wassel, dozen's and dozen's of very unique bikes. Faulta's 1974 center port CZ. Glad to meet socalmx also.  I hope this guy puts on another charity event.  I was a little rushed for time but would love to see these bikes again.

Penton Talk / Hopetown reunion

Socalmx, I will look you up.  I did Hope Town once, I think 1973 give or take a year.  Running third with I think a little over a lap to go and the condensor wire came off my CZ right before the mud hole.  Still had a great time.  Had to qualify in the morning because there were so many entries and ran the finals in the afternoon.  Still great memories.

Thanks Ron. Great story.
Living, racing and growing up in So.Cal was a great time.  I didn't appreciate it as much back then as I should have.  But I cherish the memories now.  (You don't know what you had until it is gone.)

I think Donny Emler, owner of FMF actually got his start at Precision Cycle with EC.  I have heard a variety of different stories about many of the early guys being taught by the "Wizard".

Gods speed E.C.  I first met EC in 1972-3 when he built the most power 400CZ I ever rode.  It was as fast as any factory bike, and I actually pulled Billy Payne's Maico (which I think EC also built) and a factoy Kawasaki on the start on the International track at Indian Dunes.  Too bad I wasn't that good of a rider.  Never had a bike that powerful since.  For the past year I have had numerous conversations with EC and he was mentoring me in trying to duplicate that CZ with one of the 400s I now have.  Just a couple of months ago I got it together and needless to say, it is much faster than what I started with, but still did not compare to the one EC built.  EC, you were one of a kind and I will miss our talks.  Our prayers are with you and your family.

Penton Talk / Riding after a stroke and warfarin..

Freddie,
Good to hear your are riding again.  Also glad to hear of the pending surgery to repair the septal defect.  You have clearly documented the risks though.  May I make a suggestion until the surgery, ride cautiously and just have a little fun, not too much, but just enough to keep your sanity so that there are not unforseen accidents that may delay or cancel the surgery.  You want to make it to the surgery date, so that you can go WFO afterwords. I say this only being concerned about the risks and the potential for future good outcomes.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Penton Talk / Return of Norstar boots
February 10, 2012, 04:46:15 PM
I also use to wear Hi-Points.  About 15 years ago while approaching a jump, I let my toe drop too much and caught my left toe of the boot on the face of the jump.  While still standing on the foot peg, my foot bent under the foot peg tearing all the ligaments that attach the foot to the leg at the ankle and fracturing the fibula.  After 3 separate surgeries (all done at the same time) to re-attach all the ligaments from the foot to the leg and nine bone screws to put the ankle/fibula back together, it was "as good as new".  I tried several boots over the next several years until I also tried Gaerne boots.  They fit well, are just a tad-bit wider/tall at the instep and give good support.  You don't want to mess with ankle injuries.

Penton Talk / What Did You Do To Your PENTON Today?
January 25, 2012, 12:53:54 PM
Bob,
Nice work.  I think I would probably use 3-4 on various vintage bikes.  Bob, are you willing to make a couple bucks on this?  Any suggestion on cost/price?  I want to give Bob first shot at this.  If not, anyone able to duplicate.  I kind of have 2 thumbs when trying to manufacture things like this.

Penton Talk / Riding after a stroke and warfarin..

Mike,
PPI (proton pump inhibitors) like Prilosec can cause the kidneys to excrete extra magnesium.  This causes a depletion of the magnesium blood levels (hypomagnesemia).  The lowered levels of magnesium cause a variety of problems, one of them being cardia arythmias in some individuals.  If you take a PPI, you should have your blood blood tested yearly for magnesium levels, it is not a routine test and you need to make sure you request this special test from your M.D.  In my experience, many M.D.s do not even know this is a problem yet.  The magnesium supplementation is to replace the lost magensium filtered out by the kidneys.

Freddie,
The extra swelling is due to the blood thinners, and the reason most of the time while on blood thinners the recommendation is to not do things that are of a high risk due to prolonged bleeding.

Penton Racing Talk / Unadilla update.
January 25, 2012, 12:34:06 PM
I just received an email from unadilla.com that they are organizing transportation from the west coast, through New Mexico, St.Louis, etc. back to New York. Possibly other routes as needed.  $450 per bike from Californian round trip, 20 bikes in the rig.

Freddie, don't give up.  One of the pro ISDE riders had a similar thing happen a couple years ago, in January.  Had the heart surgery a few weeks later and still road the ISDE in Mexico for the US Team, and finished well.  I was told by my cardiologist not to ride ever again, but he misdiagnosed me.  I take over the counter omeprozole (prilosec)and it caused a condition called hypomagnesemia.  This causes cardia arythmias and PVCs.  After tons of tests, he said I had a electrical problem with my heart and it would just stop one day and not to put any stress on it, "No riding". FORGET THAT.  I did my own research and discovered several research articles on cardiac electrical problems and found research the PPIs (like Prilosec) cause PVCs.  You would think the cardiologist would know this.  I supplemented my diet with extra magnesium and low-and-behold, problem solve.  I councel all my patients now on the possible side affects of PPIs.  I have found 5 people with cardiac conditions related to PPIs over the past year that their PCP or cardiologist misdiagnosed.  Follow the doctors recommendations, but make sure you get accurate information and make an educated decision on any health care issue.

Penton Talk / Congratulations

Riding both KTM and "Green", I have support for both.  I have always been a big fan of Roger D. also.  In watching both Ryans, I think Ryan V. is currently the faster rider right now.  Maybe Dungey and KTM can make some additional improvements to bump it up a little more.  I must say though, that it is great to see 2 great talents fighting it out, without any "dirty" riding, and with respect for each other.  They make it look so easy, yet all of us who have ever riden competitively know how truly difficult it is.  I would also like to congratulate KTM on their win and wish both Ryans a healthy and competitive year.
