Penton Racing Talk / Helmets of the SIX DAYS
April 07, 2005, 09:10:16 PM
Should have asked my brother Hans, he was passed by guys wearing most of those helmets!  (just kidding, he won't even get on a bike anymore and he deserves the prod!)

Penton Talk / Penton/KTM loyality ?
February 18, 2004, 09:46:14 PM
Good Question Paul,

Inovation, technology, support, and fitness for a particular purpose have not changed from the Penton days.

We rode the Pentons in the old days because they were as advanced a bike a a guy could find and the Austrians wasted no time in changing to a better part or feature. Forks, shocks, motor porting all changed at the will of the factory because they could and still can incorporate production changes.

You knew then and now that your Penton/KTM was different from whatever else every other manufacturer made.  Your airbox was different, your forks were usually better, you knew you were riding what the team guys were.  You knew if there was a fix needed, it was probably already in a dealer sheet somewhere.

Our dealers were USUALLY sport oriented, they were part of the sport, and they were usually out there in the mud with you on Sunday.  If you had a problem, a call to Lorain got something done.  My dealer is still an offroad guy, still part of the sport, still not selling streetbikes or cars.  (well, maybe power equipment..) The support is still there.

Penton/KTM always made machines for us eastern offroad riders. They always delivered aggressive power, they always turned in the woods, and they were always reliable.  (no excuses allowed for poor upkeep, thats your own fault, you ride 'em, you work on 'em!)( I put that in for my Dad)  They're still the same way.  They come ready to ride, they are set up for my sorry butt in the woods instead of some 18 year old on an MX track; they incorporate technology the orientals haven't, and they finish- the year.  I replace chains, sprockets, tires, a piston, and fluids.  Thats it.

Vic Ely was in my garage last year, we were laughing at the shape of my old bikes. I had a newer 250exc in the mix; he looked at it and said "thats all business".   He's right, they always were.

Penton Talk / 1968 Little Burr Enduro

Ted WHO????

Fellow POGGERS,  this here Ted is a Honda guy, be very careful! To our knowledge... he never owned a Penton.... and as much as it hurts to admit, he humbled lots of A class Penton riders with his oriental four strokes.

Ted, there's always a room in the executive suite for you at the five star Carbondale Garden Manor Hotel, tell them you know me, and since it turns out you're still alive...we could use an old experinced layout helper.  Its fun, easy, never rains, and we get free lunches too!

Denny McClaine?  was the '69 or '70 winner??

Penton Talk / 1968 Little Burr Enduro

Folks,

Thanks for the interest, the date of the 47th running of the Little Burr National Enduro is August 29 '04, the location is the infamous Vinton County Jr Fairgrounds; McArthur Ohio. Camping, showers available there. Closest towns are McArthur, Wellston, Jackson, Athens and Chillicothe and Carbondale.

//WWW.EnduroRiders.com is our site, contact/entry/motel info is there.  if we don't have the Burr hotel/motel section done, look under our dual sport, same place, same accomidations.

Rocket,   Dust really hasn't been a problem for us in the spring....but I'll take the temp and dust concerns to our next meeting.

Burr trivia: John Young of Alsip Ill. won the '66 Burr on a 441 Victor. He rode on the first minute.

As long as I'm doing shameless plugs, don't forget, Athens Motorcycle Club  (Athens, Ohio) has a qualifier in May.  Two days of nice trails and nice test sections will mean a really nice ride there also.

I love this sport!!!

One more thing Rob,

Hope you take this in the humorous effort its being made, but do you have to bring up a rain drenched Little Burr story?  I think it didn't rain back in '74, and maybe it was a dry event in '78, but in '79 we flooded or otherwise expired all but 19 finishers so our record back then didn't average out any too good.  The thing I still don't get was some good folks in Indiana still said Black Coal was harder???

Seriously, this past May we put on a 180 miler which was rideable and it actually did not rain until the end of the event.  We've moved this years event (the national) to August to make for a more rideable event, and we're promising: NO BOTTLENECKS!!!  We're hoping to see some old timers this August.

ROB,

If you run into any more Burr results in your treasures, would it be possible to photocopy them and send them?  We'll gladly pay associated costs. As you might know, the Burr is a national again this August and we'd love to be able to display anything you might have.

Any chance you're from central Ohio??

Thanks, Heinz Raidel, Enduro Riders

Penton Talk / Call To Arms

I was almost ready to volunteer to go battle those nasty Hodaka people when two things came to mind...  First, their Hodakas will probably never finish a moto (mine never did; and second, (i have seen a lot of this group and you would seem to eat as well as I do)...well...we probably belong on bigger bikes!!!

Penton Talk / Little Burr 45th anniversary May 25th
April 17, 2003, 08:29:31 PM
Its on May 25th...

Okay fellow Pentonites, where else can you become a part of a tradition such as this... the 45th annual running of the Little Burr,  its been a national enduro, a local enduro, an ISDE qualifier, and once it was both a qualifier and a national enduro..

Cost is $40 to ride.  There's no vintage class but you can ride the first 40 miles and loop back to the clubgrounds easily. Take in some of the finest southern Ohio has to offer...  If it rains and you finish the whole event on a vintage bike within your hour I will take up a collection for your entry.

email if you're interested!
