Penton Talk / Penton/KTM Frames
February 04, 2008, 07:03:41 PM
They all at least should have had the center tabs-most High Breather frames I saw by even 91-94 had already been buggered, rusted etc-the MC5 frames always seemed to be less rusty and more complete...but why did'nt I just call you to answer this..LOL

Tom-I am sorry you never got the part you needed to fix your 125. I was prepared to thrash on it with you. Jerry, I was glad to meet you.
Teddy nice to see you again-and I really wish I could have started the day off with you-I was pretty ill at the time-and dehydrated later Sunday. Ron-I missed you again. Look for me #13L Maico-and as soon as I can scheme it an MC5 250.
Teddy, thanks for your prayers, I was especially touched Sunday when my uncle, twin of my late father came to the track with my cousins, Mark and Casey. I just wish I could have ridden better.

Penton Talk / Fuel
March 29, 2005, 11:38:32 AM
While I prefer another oil, I can attest that Bob's bikes run quite well...especially that 250 Mc5-it is a particularly stong one.

On the fuel note-Lynn Shoup has recommended 100LL and run it for years. Mike Helper has run it for 30 yrs. We discoverd Saturday that the Castor 927 was separating with the av gas. I am now using Golden Spectro at 50:1 and have jetted bike accordingly.

You can adjust with jetting and timing your bike to run on either, pump gas, av gas or race gas. The best thing about the av gas is that it is low lead- 100 oct, very consistent and inexpensive.
Also, at 100 oct the jetting is not far off pump gas jetting.
I have run pump and race before. Usually the pump worked fine-sometimes I had a bike that liked the race gas better-more timing leaner jetting. The air cooled open bike is one i had not encountered til now-so this is what I have found out so far with it. James

Penton Talk / Gas tank finish

Tom you bring some good points-but you always do. After banging fenders and spraying for a few years, I too found that you can get some good results with spray bomb/extensive prep. The orange peel is a real sour note to me-but again you can sand and clear or..I have found that spraying a few coats-then wet sanding the paint with 600, and respraying helps mitigate the orange peel.
Also, you may be able to get a "spray-val" sprayer-a chraged canister powering a glass container of whatever paint you want to mix.
I have spray bombed some parts that people refused to believe were not sprayed with an automotive grade paint. Like the frame on Bob Brizee's 250-or the clamps. I do need to try to spray his fender better. You recommended scuffing and clearing the glass rear MC5 piece. I was think of a white base/satin clear. Have you had good results doing this?
Thanks, and BTW Bob's shoulder is better now.  James

Wanted / For Sale / Longer shift lever
March 22, 2005, 02:56:40 PM
Phil I finally used a shifter with a broken tip-cut it in half and welded it to a used aftermarket sfiter with chewed spilnes. Put them both together and it worked great-looked bad though. James

Penton Talk / Crotch Assembly

I thought the 400s last year was 79-replaced by the 420 the same year. The 1st gen 125s last year was 78. and the silver 250s last year was 80. If that is correct then the clutch actuator shown would be for an 80-82 open bike (390-495) or an 81-82 250-I thought the 125s of the era were different. I could be way off but this is how I remember it. James

Penton Talk / MC5 Project

Some silver paint and a 76-77 swingarm would change all that. The 388 mm marzocchis are leagal as they were available then. I have not ridden a 78, but I have not ridden a 76 or 77 that did not handle great. James

State farm will write a policy covering my Maico for an insured value of $6000.00 replacement costs. e-bay autions and receipts are needed. I think i was quoted about $ a year 150. James

Penton Talk / 74 - 77 Engine/Frame Fit
March 11, 2005, 09:30:12 PM
I had a 250 with the 72 175 frame and MC5 swingarm-I did not know what it was. It was light but I thought it handled much better in the high breather (74-75) heavier frame. James

Jd, use a good chemical stripper on the majority of the flaking paint if you have layers of it. Aircraft Stripper is what I prefer here in the U.S. I think you can get better strippers in the U.K. as well. Finish by bead blasting. If you only have one layer or so of paint-skip the chmical stripper and go straight to bead blasting.
