Penton Talk / Bike Shipping?
April 14, 2004, 08:08:38 PM
I shipped a snowmobile in a full crate, without removing the handlebars, that weighed 700 pounds for $350 from Indiana to Utah (terminal to terminal) through Yellow freight.  I had to take the ski's off.

Hello, a couple guys have asked me to part out the Lectron and Marzocchi shocks, but i will not part this out.  I want to see it go to someone who will ride it.

If some of you may remember, I sold a 1976 Mint 400 to Herm a while back.  It turns out that, that 400 was originally raced by Chris seals in the '76 International Six Days Trials.  I think this 250 was owned by him too, because i got this from the same guy i got the 400 from, and he got them from the same guy.  This bike has a lot of history with it, and i will NOT part it out.

I would like to see it go to someone who can appreciate these old bikes.

Thank you

Oops, i meant to say that the aluminum side cover is on the right side of the bike, as you are sitting on it.  It goes right above the swingarm, and also this not the orange and yellow one, it is just aluminum.

Thanks

Thanks everybody for the info.  I talked to Al, the Penton Supplier, and he said i ought to be alright on the plastic Lectron Bowl as long as i don't live near any big cities where they add alcohol to the gas.  I am in need of a shifter, clutch cable, front brake lever perch, a chain, and maybe a kickstarter.

My kickstarter is a 2 piece design, but when i kick it, the end piece will come off, where it swivels and folds up.  Is there any way to fix this?

Does anyone have paint codes for the frame, side covers, fenders, airbox, etc.?

Also, there is an aluminum side cover on the left side of the bike, near the swingarm.  The guy i bought it from threw in a new one, and i have no idea of how to install it.  It is in perfect condition, i think it was new old stock.

I am trying to do all this on a budget, i might have to sell the Marzocchi shocks and get stock ones just to fund this.  Does anyone know the worth of these?  They are in good condition.  And also, does anyone know the worth of the lectron carb?  I think i might put the Bing back on.  I'm not parting it out, just trying to fund my project. :D

I would also like to add that out of everyone replying to this post complaining about what i thought the best way to do something is, none of them were interested in it.  I guess you're just talking to be talking.  It would be different if someone that was originally interested was mad.

Listen guys, i'm not out here to make a fortune or rob all of you.  Just trying to get the most out of my investment.  I drove it like that with no problem at all.  Clutch can be pulled in enough to almost come to a complete stop.  No one is forcing you to read this. No one is forcing you to buy it.  This is a free country and you don't have to buy it, read it, or even care; but with that i guess you are all free to piss and moan about a bike that you weren't even interested in and that the guy found out is worth more and is trying to get his money back.

I have been getting e-mails from the people actually interested saying that it was a good decision and that the bike os worth more than what i originally said.  I could've just asked the worth of it first then posted it for sale and none of would've given it a second thought.

Well what do you want me to do?  Tell them whatever person gets here first gets it?  I don't think i'll have everyone waste their time in doing that.

I'm glad you're not one of those who want it too.

Well there are 16 people interested.  I did not take the engine out and fix it, I decided to sell it as is.  Like I said it will be hard to turn over every now and then.  It will probably start right up if i would turn the gas on but i do not want to risk it!  This is not a project of any kind and it will not need any parts.  I was just riding it yesterday!  All it needs is the crankcase cleaned out and maybe to grind down some knicks on the piston.  Clutch also needs adjusted, but all the gears are synchronized so it is driveable without clutch.

As I said, 16 people want it, so i do not know who to sell it to.  The only way i can think of is to sell it to the person that offers the most .  But, I would be much, much more intereted in a trade than money.

E-mail me with your offer of money or what you have to trade.  I am sorry, i would sell it for $600 like i said originally but too many people want it!  Here are links to pictures.

I bought this with the intent to restore it, but i can't afford to do it right now.  It is a 1974 Penton 250, with the spark arrestor exhaust, so i guess it was an enduro model.  It has marzocchi piggyback shocks that are in aboce average condition, they have purple springs.  The guy said it has marzocchi front forks, but i can't confirm that, there are no markings on them.  If someone can tell me how to tell, i wil llet you all know.  It has a Lectron Carburator with a clear float bowl.  I will also include the stock Bing carb.  It was raced enduro in Indiana, and still has the tags on it from some of the races, such as the 1975 Haspin 100 (i got ahold of the original owner and racer and it turns out he placed 2nd on it).  It has quick change axles, newer rims, a NOS headlight shroud and light, a NOS aluminum side cover.  The tank and side covers are in good shape.  The seat has a few ri[s and tears and the bottom is covered in tape.  It has the stock fenders, they are in great shape except they are discolored.  The forks are in great shape.

Here is everything it needs: a shift lever (Al buehner has them for $20), a clutch perch, a clutch cable, and a chain.  I fixed the kickstarter lever problem.  It could use new pegs, they are a real eyesore (rusted).  It also needs a spark arrestor (to be enduro legal).

I would like to see $800 out of it, which is the same as what i paid for it.  You can e-mail me at [email protected] for pictures.  It is located in Frankfort, Indiana.  It is about an hour Northwest of Indianapolis.

Thanks

Hello, I have just bought a 1974 Penton 250 and have a lot of questions.  The guy put a Lectron carburetor on it, it also came with a Bing.  The lectron carburetor has a clear float bowl, and a flat-style slide (I might be selling this soon and putting the stock one on there).  It also has resorvoir shocks on it.  They say Marzocchi on them.  The forks are perfect condition on the outside (no dings or anything), but they are almost froze, they only move a half inch when i slam it down.  Does anyone know a thing about freeing these?

And, I am in dire need of a shifter for it, does anyone have one they would like to part with????

I'm pretty excited about this bike, it has a tag on the right side cover that says Haspen 100 ARP '75.  I assume this means it was raced at Haspen Acres in 1975.  Does anyone have any info on this race?  It was raced by a pretty reputable rider around here in Indiana, maybe he won it.

Thanks

Penton Talk / What Kind of Penton???
April 07, 2004, 08:53:49 PM
Hello, i am in the process of acquiring a Penton 250 motorcycle.  It has a red, plastic tank, and i think it had a black/white stripe that went horizontally across the tank.

Can anyone tell me what the worth of this bike would be in semi to fully restored condition?  How much is it worth in average (well used) condition?

And, not to mention, what kind of bike this is?  Anyone have any info on these bikes?  Anyone have nos, or like new fenders for one of these.

Oh yeah, and it had lights.

Thanks

What I have is a 1976 Mint 400 with lights.  Tank and plastics are in good candition, as is seat.  Pretty good condition.  This was my xr650 eater!  Nothing could beat it, I couldn't keep the front wheel down, it would ridea wheelie in every gear.

But one day I was riding a wheelie in third gear and it started to bog down, front end went down real fast and then nothing.  Every now and then it will be hard to kick.  Piston has a few knicks in it that will be resurfaced.  I am assuming something got sucked in there.  It also needs the clutch adjusted.  I would part with it for $600 right now.  If no one wants it I will carry it down basement and do a frame off restoration in the winter then try to sell it for $1500-$2000 in the spring.  This is located in Frankfort, Indiana.  You can e-mail me at [email protected]

It always used to start up on the first kick too.  Also comes with a tank bag and map pouch.  It was raced enduro by the guy before me and it has quick change wheels, brake saver, all that good stuff.

Thanks
