New ones are available on Ebay. Genuinenos. I've tried to fill the void with silicone with some success but the new ones are inexpensive and they are better than the old ones or bebuilt one.

Penton Talk / Lighting woes...

Hi Dave,
Glad you got it sorted. I should check in here more often but I've been buried with bike builds, part searches, and ignitions.

Penton Talk / LED Bulbs
September 19, 2011, 08:56:30 PM
The secret is in the resistor used to make the voltage aprox 3.3 volts.
Any voltage more that 1/2 again higher and it burns out just like a bulb. A 6 volt system uses aprox. a 150 ohm and a 12 volt sysem uses aprox. 470 resistor in series.
With this info you can then get into arrays in series and parallel. I have taken many a burned out bulbs and when heated the glass will come loose leaving a very handy base socket. You can fit a few LED's in there and solider in a resistor and make your own LED lamps. To help out use the LED Wizard at this site:

 http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

I hope this helps and it will allow more current to go to the head light for better lighting on those 6 volt systems!

Penton Talk / Part a Deek to save some Penton's?
November 01, 2010, 08:55:52 PM
Andy,
You should send the frame number to Leo Keller on the Vinduro Group. He can tell you more about it. If I'm correct it is a very rare Boondocker. I have one also and only 30 were imported with the Betor front end. Send me your frame number and I'll check it against mine. We could have consectutive Deeks!

Penton Talk / Sachs 1001/6B Large end cage bearing?
March 25, 2010, 04:58:58 PM
Joe,
Thanks for your reply.
At this point I would buy a rod kit if available. From what I've read it's a small crank with the larger 56mm pin. I haven't been able to find one from the normal sources. I hate to drive 50 miles to the guy that does my boring and crank work just to split it and then return to have it pressed back together. If I have to and source one through a bearing manufacturer then that's what I'll have to do. It looks to me like all is well except the cage bearing. It looks like it was dropped and the cage cracked and a bearing has fallen out. I thought that someone would know the dimensions of the small crank large end bearing. I know all the sizes of the Sachs 7 speeder bearing off the top of my head but I'm new to the 5-6 speeders. Any help would be appreciated!

Penton Talk / Turning signals & motoplat
February 25, 2008, 08:57:13 PM
Hello,
In order for you to use a turn signal relay you would need a bridge rectifier in the circuit. This is not possible as is. The coil is at ground potential on one side. Now if you were to lift the ground on the white wire coil then add another white wire so you have two this could be bridge rectified and thus converted to DC for your turn signals and relay. Then you have turn signals and stop light on the same coil. I dig into these qiute a bit and haven't ever tried this but the thoery is correct.  I'm finishing up a DKW Boondocker right now that I would like turnsignals on. The limited output of the Motoplat lighting does not make for good lighting and loading it down more isn't a good idea. If one were to sub low wattage more efficent bulbs or LCDs then we might be on to something. Wish I had more time to mess with this stuff.

Penton Talk / Motoplat Repairs..
January 31, 2006, 09:35:41 AM
Dane,
I have been repairing Motoplats for a short period of time. So its been moreless of an evolution. If you have any Motoplat testing or spec. information you could pass on I would be very interested in seeing it. I would like to compare notes on this subject.
I have had great success with the larger style plats which are used on the larger crank models. This gives more surface area which is critical to obtain higher current. Trigger has little to do with it. The trigger is elevated by the charging coil and I have seen very few triggers open. If they are it was because of a flywheel mishap. I have generally catered to the unfortunate few that have no ignition alternatives. Thus I see some of the most unusual ignition device ever devised.

I can repair Motoplats for half that price. With lighting coils a little more. I'm looking for  projects this winter. I have repaired my own. The bike starts on one kick and the lighting coils I can rework for 12V. If your not in any big hurry and you would like to have your old dead Motoplat repaired contact me.

Penton Talk / !977 Sachs 175 Stuck Crank?
February 09, 2004, 09:14:34 AM
The piston was stuck in the cylinder. The bike was sitting for quite some time. Once I pulled the head and put some penatrating oil down the cylinder . I tapped the piston and it came loose . I pulled the jug. I opended up both side covers to find a nice clean clutch a gear shifting mech. but the motoplat side was very rusty. I removed the motoplat and the blue seal. Looking into the ignition side bearing they look good. Looking into the gear side crank bearing they look good also.Is there anything that can come loose behind the crank that can jam it? Does the case spit for inspection without removing the clutch and crank gear? Any suggestions!

Penton Talk / LED Head Light
May 13, 2012, 10:34:39 AM
Hello All,
I have been experimenting with LED headlights. As we all know the Mini 6 Motoplat has weak lighting at best. I have recently been rewinding them for 12 volts. Somewhat of an improvement but with the limitation of 4 coils,6 magnets, and a small surface area it still is not sufficent at idle. Now the LED bulbs have evolved to the point where they are equal to a 40 watt incandecent with 1/4 the current draw. I have tried two types. One was a spot light the other a bulb type. The bulb type works great in a CEV shell. Here's a couple of photos.

I can steer you in the right direction if you wish to make your own or I can provide a 4 3/4" sealed beam for you.
Just contact me off list at: [email protected]
