Penton Talk / Re: Mikuni tuning for Jackpiner
July 12, 2024, 08:23:57 AM
Great thanks for responses, in particular Kevin's most in-depth specs.  Please forgive my inquiry slip - carb on bike in question is indeed a 30mm, not a 26.
I will pull carb apart today and compare what's there to info provided.

Penton Talk / Mikuni tuning for Jackpiner
July 10, 2024, 07:41:48 AM
Hey, all.  Have a freshly rebuilt '73 Jackpiner w/new electronic ignition and a fresh, 26mm Mikuni.  With jetting as supplied with the carb, bike is a reluctant starter and tries to load up.  Once in operation, it feels both lean and rich - if that makes any sense.  Comes on decently if I "ease" into the throttle but will bog if throttle is opened abruptly.  Plus, although I did not go flyin' down the road to test top end, bike does appear to break up some at higher revs.
Note, there is no intake restriction but I've not yet opened the exhaust to see if it is plugged up.  Regardless, to save me digging through umpteen zillion pages of info on Mikuni tuning for everything from mopeds to TZ750's, does anyone have suggestions for what Pilot/Main Jets work will with this Jackpiner/26mm combo?

Penton Talk / Piston Power Show thanks

Great thanks to the Penton Owners Group for including Dave Nuzum's Hare Scrambler in the IX Center show.  We rebuilt this bike over the past year for Dave and he left it with us long enough to be included in the show.  It was an honor for us to have this machine included among the other fine Pentons at the POG display.

The Vintage Movement

For those of you unfamiliar with the situation, Bob Wentzel and I operate a "hobby" business, which we call The Vintage Movement.  The affair is an outgrowth of Bob's and my vintage motorcycle collections, efforts, and interests.
We've got quite a bit going on at TVM, including a focus on hosting young riders on our vintage machines.  Of those young riders is a tremendous enthusiast whom many of you may know of - Samantha Vallish.  Recently married to Cody Long, both Samantha and Cody are extensively involved in both modern and vintage motorcycling and racing.
Samantha has to date campaigned a variety of TVM machines, but this year we are particularly proud that she will be aboard a 175 Jackpiner, recently acquired from and very well prepared by veteran AHRMA competitor, Billy Haschek.
Look for Samantha on this 'Piner at various events this year and join me in wishing her the best of good fortune.

Hey, everyone - here's your chance to visit the world-famous Vintage Movement shop.  Bob Wentzel and Ted Guthrie are hosting a special Penton Owners Group luncheon and meeting at The Vintage Movement complex, located in North Benton, Ohio.
Tour the shop and see all the treasures within.  Many, many cool motorcycles, and THOUSANDS of pieces of interesting memorabilia and plain old cool junk.
Location is 20621 North Benton Rd West, North Benton, Ohio 44449.  Look for the Husky on the pole out front.  Meeting starts at 12:00 noon.  Food and refreshments served, plus we'll have a fun trivia contest with some great prizes.
Don't miss out.  It's an experience you will NOT forget!

Penton Racing Talk / Quinn Wentze - Penton alumnus
February 27, 2022, 07:52:46 AM
Quinn Wentzel, son of long-time POG member Bob Wentzel, has on multiple occasions carried high the Penton racing banner.  Quinn has in the past won multiple AMA GNCC Vintage Championships, typically aboard Penton motorcycles.  Here's a picture of Quinn carrying the number one plate on a Mint 400, enroute to yet another win.  Photo courtesy Bill Smith.

In more recent years Quinn has been competing in Hard Enduros in both the U.S. and in Europe, and is ranked as one of the top American Riders.  Quinn is currently a factory Rieju rider, and has just signed with the apparel company Leatt.  Photo courtesy of Megan Griffith.

Penton Talk / Penton heroes - Frank Gallo
February 24, 2022, 08:21:52 AM
Here in NE Ohio one of our favorite sons is Fast Frank Gallo.  For anyone who is not already familiar with Frank's accomplishments, back in the 1970's this modest fellow from Lisbon, Ohio was one of the very best off-road riders in the U.S., if not the entire world.  Possibly the peak of Frank's racing accomplishments came in 1978 when, were it not for elimination of all scores from the final day due to wet and muddy conditions, Frank may very well have won that year's International Six-Day Trial - OVERALL.
Although not an exact replica of Frank's bike from that event, The Vintage Movement recently put together a tribute bike, honoring Frank's achievements.
Just check that sly look for a little insight into Frank's character.

I second that!  Al does a great job with the newsletter, and we greatly enjoy all the terrific information and stories he shares with us, through this fine publication.

Thanks also to Mr. Richard Colahan, for his contributions to the sport, and his support of vintage motorcycling in general.

Penton Talk / Larry Maiers appearance at NPM on hold
February 15, 2020, 08:46:38 AM
Hey folks, how about some response to this post?  We've got one of the most iconic figures in the sport of motorcycling, soon to make a public appearance at an awesome facility, filled with cool old cars, and an excellent display of trick, vintage motorcycles.  Let's get some interest going in making a significant POG presence at the event, and showing support for Mr. Larry Maiers - the President of Penton Imports!  Larry has had a huge impact on our sport.  This is going to be a great, fun event!

Thanks to all who have requested stickers, and all donations greatly appreciated.

Just as a reminder, you can e-mail me with sticker requests: [email protected], and my PayPal account is same address.

Should you wish to send a check, mail to:  Ted Guthrie, 33855 Hoopes Rd, Salem, Ohio 44460.

The memorial fund stands at about $400.00 as of today.  Still working on how best to honor Doug.  It has been suggested that a plaque commemorating him be placed at the Daytona Memorial, but indications are there is already one (or possibly two) plaques already in place.  Bev Klamforth is currently checking on this.  Please discuss at next POG meeting and present ideas and suggestions.
