I am looking at what is being advertised as a Sachs 125 Machine, although the tank shows a DKW name emblem on it....Does anyone know about this bike....did DKW make a 1969 and how would a Sachs end up with the tank saying DKW ?  The seller says it is all original and that his Grandpa removed the Sachs emblems/buttons that screwed on and gave them away.  Maybe I am BS'd or Sachs buttons are out there?

Any input would be helpful.  Oh, yeah I need to buy a new camera....cause my pictures aren't looking so good, but you all will get the idea.

Victor,

Sachs and DKW had a bike then with the Sachs 125 motor in it.  Does it have forks or leading link?  The emblems I think screwed on and I think interchanged between brand.  Not positive on that but think so.

Larry it has a leading link front and screwed on DKW emblems......can I get Sachs emblems to screw on the machine?

The motor sovers say Sachs and are not cut like some DKW's I have seen.

Thanks.

Neat little bike.

Victor,

There are some repro ones that sell on eBay.  Just do a search for Sachs in eBay motors.  I don't think the early Deeks had the DKW on the sidecover.  Again, not sure but pretty sure.

Check out "On any Sunday" you will see a bunch of them.  I had a ton of Sachs/DKW inventory but no one wanted it here in the US so I sent it to a friend in Roma Italy (shipping container), They love them, especially the 50's and 80's.  When I did sell Sachs stuff here in the US, 90 percent went to California and the other 10 went to Texas.

Victor,

If you decide you want a set of DKW side covers for the Sachs engine on that bike let me know I have an extra used set that is in good shape.

If my memory serves me well, Sachs became DKW in 1972. That year model had a different boxy gas tank on it. The DKW emblems were glued on and there were vinyl knee pads on the tank as well. Along with the tank was a different seat and rubber side panels for the airbox. I suspect that the bike you have just might have a later model gas tank on it.

Ric,
I have restored a '71 or '72 with the square (toaster) tank. It is all original except for the rectangular shaped exhaust silencer. If you have one I would be glad to purchase it.

Victor,
You are probably looking at a '70 DKW. It will have a round tank with chrome side panels with no knee pads. That's what I rode back in the early 70s and loved it-even the ugly leading link front end. I don't recall if the engine side covers on my '70 had Sachs or DKW cast into them, but the one that I have now has DKW covers. Also, I have seen what appeared to be identical bikes with Sachs and DKW tank badges.

Victor, I own a 1970 sachs 125 with the round, steel tank.  i never saw a dkw label on a 69 or 70 sachs 125cc.  in 1971, though they changed to dkw written on the tanks but the tank was the same shape as the 69-70 tanks.  I think the 71 dkws motocross tank was yellow with or without the earls forks.  trust, but verify. cheers.

Nelson,I have one of those bikes with a complete exhaust on it and i have an extra pipe for it that came with a bunch of parts.I'll try and take a look today for the spare pipe and see if there is a good silencer on it(i can't remember if it does or not-imagine that[:0]).I just took a break from prepping bikes to head up to AHRMA race up by phoenix tomorrow and will look around for the other pipe- if i don't have to dig too much stuff out.Otherwise i'll check when i get home.Later,

Victor, hi,
here are pics of my 69 Sachs K100GS and K125GS, both bikes origional-unrestored, the 100 came out of Texas {no rust}, the 125 came out of Conn. {some rust}, New England is a little harder on bikes !!
although they are very similar there are small changes between the 2,

also i added a pic of my 71 DKW 125GS, i recently traded a 1970 - 125 but the only difference between the 70 and the 71 is the 70 has a bolt on rear loop like the 69's, all with 5A motors,           1970 started the use of the alloy top end,

cool little bikes, i personally love the way the leading-link front end handles, not a great flyer but really rails in the turns !!

hope this helps,

regards,

Victor,
My first bike was a '69 Sachs, 125.  I bought it from Baldwin Cycles in Santa Monica.  We lived in the San Fernando Valley (Granada Hills)and I use to ride with Bobby Baldwin, the owners son.  We went to school together.
My Sachs looked just like the one in the picture.
Good luck.
