Check with Al Buehner, Penton USA. I am pretty sure he has both parts list and manual for these bikes.

Front forks are 370cc, I prefer ATF or 15 Wt depending on the temperature & the owners manual says 0-45 degrees 5wt or ATF, 45-90 degrees 10wt. The manual says 1.6 Liters of ATF transmission oil or SAE 20-30 wt. motor oil, I prefer ATF, since newer motor oil additives are bad for clutches, but genuine motorcycle motor oil doesn't have the same EPA constraints. Used 1974-80 Penton/KTM kickstarters are on eBay often at fair prices and Uni-Filters, No-Toil, and  Twin-Air makes filters to fit the bike. Check with Al Buehner on this sites main page under suppliers for parts and an alternate to the stock kick starter. Note**Most of Al's parts are only listed up to 1978, but for the air filter with a plastic air box and kickstarter, if it will fit a 78, it will work on your early 1980. Mike

I followed Brian K's posting on the forks. ATF, forks collasped, springs out 6 inches from the top.  For the track, I run the fork tubes 6 rings from the top triple clamp. In the desert all the way up.  This is the best set-up.

I couldn't find the filter cage and holding rod and my airboot is shot.  I ended up using a 6 inch in length Uni dual stage sock filter.  It fits in the air box and clamps on the carb perfect.

Just for fun, My 6-DAY filter and caged fit perfectly in the airbox,  I just need to make a holding rod and get the air boot, but the Uni works so go, I just deceided to leave.  With the Uni, I can get the carb out real easy.

The only difference between the 2 is lights and a spark arrester added to the end of the pipe and a bolt that changes the tranny from a 5 speed to a 6.  This takes about 3 min's to change.  If you change the bolt the counter shaft sprocket is changed too.  Nothing to big though.  I don't know of anybody that has the 5 speed set up.

Al has a owners manual for it and it's pretty good.

Per Phil K I run a NGK B9HS plug for the track and the high desert.  Haven't change it, since I put it in 3 months ago.

Maxima super M premix and VP C-12 gas, mixed at 50:1.

If the bike has the stock chain guides, they will fall apart after your 1st ride.  I posted some pic's on my home made chain guide.  I bought the stock one's from europe, but my home made chain guides work so good, I just left them on.

I guess my bigest worry is how will I fix the motor if anything serious goes wrong.  I'll worry about that when the time comes.

All in all, For a 31 year old bike, It runs pretty darn good.  Very happy with it.

KTM's frames from 1978-early 1980, with the exception of the 1978 GS6, were the same for each respective year between MX and Enduro models, including the engines. The Enduro model just had a bolt on rear frame loop and different rear fender with a tail light and a headlight and speedo were added including a brake light switch. All models to my knowledge had the lighting coil in the Motoplat ignition and the ability to add lights to the MX version at the dealership if wanted. Very few actually had the 1st gear lockout pin installed making the 6 speed transmission into a 5 speed. Mike
