What is the best color for tank (i.e., what is the precise name of the 'orange"), supplier? What paint is used on frame (color and supplier)? Were the side panels originally metal? Mine are (but they're raggy). If so, are metal panels being reproduced? Finally, what is the best source for fenders. Thanks!

Maybe some one else weigh in on the color orange, mine came from the west coast and so it came red. As for the side panels no  I think they were plastic. My buddy Tom sells some realy nice replacements that are fiberglass. I don't know of anyone selling aluminum side panels. look under suppliers there are lots of great stuff there.

Thom: Thanks for the pointer. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who has paint experience. I'm not totally wed to one color combo. Just want to make her look fast! So tell me: what red? what kind of gray for frame? Is there a best source for "Penton red" (or for that matter, blue, orange, gray etc)? Cheers! terence McEnally, Raleigh NC

Tom Brosius has the orange listed as "Duplicolor International Tractor Orange" near the bottom of his website. There is a link to his website where other colors are listed on the suppliers page from the Home page on this site. I personally like the Duplicolor DE1650 500° Ceramic Engine Enamel followed by a 2-3 light coats of Duplicolor DE1636 500° Ceramic Engine Enamel clear coat, applied while the base color is still slightly tacky. It is important to follow the directions closely, as this paint is very sensitive to humidity while applying. It is resisant to gas and oil. I have also used the DE1615 which is more of a shiny aluminum color for some components, like repainting rusty or dull kick start or shift levers.

Terence, I have never painted my bike, I have shelfed the stock tank. Several years ago I ended up with a new plastic tank made by Clarke.  I have a set of aluminum side covers. they were given to me by a guy that worked for local dealer. They had several sets of them on their sponsored bikes, Some how I ended up with a set.. and they have been on my bike ever since... I was never all that worried about making a bike look pretty and more about making sure that it runs its best...
I have made a bike look pretty before and after awhile it did not look so nice, cause I raced it alot...
