I went in '96 when the ISDE was in Hameenlinna Finland.  Beautiful country, friendly people, very expensive food, lodging, etc.  A Big Mac combo meal was something like 8 bucks there when it was barely pushing $3.50 here in the states.  But, like any Euro event, it is something to experience at least once in your riding career.
Opening ceremonies were a vintage enthusiasts delight with fully restored ISDT bikes from the 40's thru 70's escorting the procession.  All riders were in period correct riding gear, too.  Dwight Rudder's ISDTRR outfits would fit right in! (and I mean that as a compliment!)
Many of the riders sell t-shirts to help defray their costs.  Last year I got shirts from Jeff Fredette and Fred Hoess, something like 46 or 47 ISDT/E's between them.  Most of the Trophy and Vase guys have lots of factory help, while the club team guys are pretty much like privateers.  Jeff and Fred work all year at their private businesses to squirrel away enough money to make it to the Six Days.  Out-of-pocket for Finland will probably be in the 20-25K range, so these guys can use all the help we can throw their way.
Just my 2 cents worth....actually 1.3 cents in this administration's economy.

8 bucks is really not all that bad, considering I paid 21.75 for a burger, fries and a glass of water in the Hotel in NYC...
Jeff, was the meat real beef? Back in 1978 on a 3 month trip under the ice, we pulled into Rotterdam and rode the train to Amsterdam. 4 Hungry Sailors saw a McDonalds and said "oh boy" but the burgers at McD's were soybean patties and were gross, but the fries were good!
Now to show my age, I remember my 1st trip to McD's in about 1965 and burger were .10, cheeseburgers were .12 and fries were .10 and drinks (one size back then) were .10, this was before they even had a Big Mac.

He he he, I remember the good old days at the Golden Arches when you could feed a family of four for less than 2 bucks, too.
