I was watching Dust to Glory again. It got me to thinking, what was my perfect race.  winning is not the issue but when was there a time when I felt like as they were say, (..
in the moment) when everything is working just right..  I have two short stories to start this off and hope others will share theirs too. A number of years ago I and some buddies were up in the mountains riding our mountain bikes.. we had assended up nearly 3 thousand feet, it took several hours to make it that far, after stopping for some snacks we turned around and headed back to the towards the truck, some of the youngs guns headed out first and I finished putting things away, I realized that I had been left behind, I headed down the trail and there in front of me was a river of bolder about the size of a 4 man rock, with a narrow trail through the middle. I was going too fast and I bounced my way to the bottom of the trail like a ping pog ball, one false move and I would have been a flat spot on a rock. I could not believe how fast I was going and if I allowed fear to enter end I would have crashed so I kept the pace and there at the bottom of the sections was my friends awe struck that the old man did so well.

The second is the year I went to the ISDT RR, the last day was a grass track Motocross. All the +50 riders on the line, a short straight and a left hand hair pin. Some how I came out of that turn mid pack, and started passing riders. Everythings seemed to be clicking, the bike was running perfect, I have never ridden so fast and I finished  3rd behind one intermediate and one expert. I beat a bunch of fine expert and intemediate riders that day.. oh what funn.

I have two races, the two Vintage CC races at Marion IL in '09. I was on my '72 Berkshire, it was slick, fast, and hot. I got so-so starts both days, but by the end of the first lap I was in the lead. I won overall by over a minute Saturday and won overall by almost two minutes Sunday. It was one of those weekends where I just couldnt do anything wrong.

For me it was the 1981 youth nationals in Reedsville NC. I was on a Rm100. It was the 4th and final moto. It decided to down pour right before our race. It was more water than mud,Didn't have time to soak in. I got the holeshot led for two turns before going down. By the time I got up and going I was dead last. I kept picking off  people by the end of the moto I worked backed up to 7th. If I would have rode the other three moto's the way I did in that one I would have had a better overall. I still finished 13th overall. The hot shot was a young Ron Lechien  right before he turned pro.

Mine was in 1989 - The Daniel Boone Enduro put on by the Roadrunners MC in Princeton, KY. I rode Open B at the time on a KX500 and won my class as well as beating all the Open A riders. Memory is fading but I remember knowing I was in rare form that day. I think it was about 70 plus actual miles and I rode hard the entire event without fatigue. My wife had fixed me a big steak and eggs for breakfast and that was rocket fuel for me that day. I remember a couple of fairly gnarly creek crossing / jumps where many spectators had gathered and receiving large hoots and hollers for the way I navigated them.

Brian - that was a tremendous performance in 2009 at Little Egypt (I know a little about this event). I believe you had some helmet camera footage posted somewhere that people might want to see or see again.

Burr Oak National Enduro, 1978 on my brand-new 390-OR Husqvarna.  Rained all-day, so it was 200 miles of endurance more than skill, but I finished 3rd in open-B class, and me and my brothers took 2nd place B team.  I remember getting passed by some body with Fredette on the back of his jersey, and thinking "How does he go so fast through the woods in this @$#!.  I was 24 at the time and I think Jeff was 19.

Thanks for the compliment Derek. I had bad luck there the two years before, crashed out of the lead both days in '07, and '08 I had a throttle stick on Saturday and DNF, got a flat tire while in the lead Sunday. That weekend was one of those that I just could not put a foot wrong. Here is the helmet cam, its the entire hour of Sundays Vintage race. Its basically a hour of me strangling a Penton 100 for all its worth.

Barstow to Vegas 1974. I had earned my Intermediate classification the week before the race so I was able to start on the first line (Experts/Intermediates). I was riding my DKW 100 (engine/pipe by Uncle Donny at FMF)which had plenty of top end speed and suspension by Betor on the front and reliable Curnutts on the back. Got a great start and rode whole race without problems.
