My JP has the stock Amal and I am having problems with the carb picking up fuel.  No matter how much I tickle the carb or use the choke it will not fire.

However, when I spike the cylinder through the spark plug hole with some fuel it fires immediately and runs and idles.  After sitting for awhile I have the same problem, I have to spike the cylinder again to get it running.

All jets and orfices are clean and clear and the carb has the updates recommended by John Penton.

Any recommendations for a fix?  Yes, I know about the 30mm Bing and Mukuni replacement.

Anyone have a good 30mm Bing available?

Tony,
I can speak from a similar instance where I wanted the original Amal to work to save some expense.  In my case I had two sets of slides, jets, etc. which came from the previous owner (one set was the upgrade).  I tried every possible combination and several thorough cleanings concentrating on the pilot mixing chamber and could never solve the same exact problem as you are having.  Purchashing a 30mm Bing which came with the carb/airbox rubber bushing piece, stripped idle adjustment screw, and partially broken pilot jet the bike still started up on about the sixth kick.  :)  You'll also need a new manifold or secure some form of adaptor and possibly something to bush the carb. to the manifold.  It's not a first kick starter but starts without the plug hole charge and runs great!

I just bought a nice original Jackpiner30mm Bing from EBAY for under $50.  I also have used a 30mm Bing with the Husky top (no choke)  It starts on the first kick and runs like a top. Keep an eye on EBAY and check out "30mm Bing Carb" or "Bing Carb", that's how I find them.  Trash the Amal

Kip, Thanks.  I have been watching eBay just recently and exploring other avenues.  Those 30mm carbs are few and far between.
