WOW! It worked, thanks Mike!

Here is my latest work;  A 1980 250.  Two neat things about this bike: The original owner converted the Bilstein shocks to Ohlin shafts and seals so that they can be rebuilt.  And second, this bike was featured in the July 1980 issue of Dirt Rider.  They ran the bike in the Curly Fern Enduro as a test, and loved it.... What's not to like!

Ski - how does the 1980 250 motor compare to your MC5? And with that tank, do you have like a 100 mile range?

I found the 79 420 to have quite a bit more arm-stretching thrill than my 77 MC5 400, but then again it has like an extra 80cc headstart.

Hey Jon, Yea, that is a big tank isn't it?  I am not sure about the motor, because I got better starts with the MC5.  I think one of the reasons is because I didn't have a lot of time with this bike, so, my starts were a bit slow.  I have my MC5 pretty well dialed in, so I would say they are about the same.  Handling wise, it is a hands down to this bike.  I was only on a grass track, but the great cornering, and small breaking bumps were almost nonexistent.

Can you provide some more info on who and how those Bilstien shocks were rebuilt? I was under the impression they could not be rebuilt till I read your post. Thanks,

Bob, You are correct.  Bilstien shocks cannot be rebuilt.  These shocks were not rebuilt as Bilstiens.  The guy converted them over to Ohlin shafts and seals.  He owned a machine shop, so the time and tools was not a problem for him.

Do you think he might be able to do a few more? Do you have a contact name and number? I am curious what the cost would be? I have 3 or 4 of the 79-80 KTMs like in your pic that still have these original shocks.      Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob, I will investigate this for you, and let you know.  James
