Jackpiner frame questions...

I started dismantling my 1975 this past week, and found a few items on the frame that I didn't know what they were.  Can someone enlighten me?
1) On the front frame tubes, as they come up to the steering head, there is a small tab the goes between the two tubes with a threaded nut on it.  Is this a mount for a horn?
2) On the backbone of the frame, about 4" back from the mount for the coil, there is a small tab, with two little ears on each end.  What is it?
3) What is the purpose of the 2 1/2" rubber grommet that is above the inlet to the air box?
I am sure I will have more questions, but that's it for now.....

#2 is for the electrical terminal or power strips that all your wires  congregate around

#3  keeps all the water out of your airbox when you run through all those 3 foot deep brooks and mudholes in upstate New York!!!
Thats called a high breather frame and the inlets are in the backbone. Dont forget to blow the dust, cobwebs etc out of the vent holes.

#1 I'll speculate on. Maybe its a mount for the cable ties or the speedo cable.  If it was a horn mount, It would be a mud collector   on my bike !!

Hi Ray,

#3, why is it there?  They could have just had solid metal over that spot...

#1. I don't think it is for the spedo cable; just doesn't make sense to route it that way, cables maybe....

Thanks for the input!  Hope all is well, James

I have seen a horn mounted there before on a few bikes. Many of the frame parts manuals show a horn, but not where it mounts, but the position of the horn is with the tab for the retaining bolt facing downward, which would make the horn placement a little higher than the tab. Mike

Thanks Mike!  Is my frame the only that has one of theses on it?  It looks factory, and not something that was added on later....

#3 if you are speaking of the round rubber plug, that can be removed for allowing easier breathing in situations where the high breather system isn't needed.

My early 74 250 Hare scrambler frame (311) has one on it as do my 76 250 Cross Country frame (601), as well as both my 77 GS-6 175 (701) and my 78 GS-6 250 (801), but my recently aquired 73 Jackpiner does not. Mike

Jim, My frame has the same things as yours. I figured the tab on the down tubes was a horn mount, the rubber plug was for better breathing or maybe you put it in for wetter conditions and the bike would breath higher in the frame. #2 looks like a place to tie wires, but mine has no ears.

Bawb,
Yes, 7-305 Jackpiner with a high breather frame but no bracket. The #2 bracket is usually for mounting the wiring junction block and usually has bend over tabs to hold the block in place. Mike

My 74 JP has the same tab between the tubes.

Lots of the euro bikes seem to have horns either above the brake lever or in the spot where you have the tabs.  Maybe photos would help.:)

believe it or not that bike in the top pic is a GS-50, 6 speed, 14-HP,

dam shame none of them were imported to the US, Euro only,  what a cool bike !!!

out of all of my Pentons my 1975 125 6-Day has that same wire holder bracket and the only other bike out of my 12 Pentons to have the horn bracket is my 74 1/2 Mint 400,

go figure  :-)))
