Hi all, just wanted to know if anyone is running a digital PVL ignition on a 250 hairscrambler? I put one on my penton and the new engine lasted less than 30 minutes before the rod failed (new euro rod)I am thinking the advance curve was really wrong? It was running nice, a little flat at high rpm but no pre igniting that I could hear. Has anyone used the programable PVL unit? Any information would be a great help.

No ignition will cause a rod failure, the piston will fail long before the rod if it was something with timing. My cousin Ernie has at least one digital om one of his bikes, but he couldnt tell much difference, maybe a little better mid range but didnt pull as well on top, so the rest have the analog.

I have have used Euro rods for years. I would think that the rod was set to tight. When putting crank together you have to keep the crank half width to spec.Euro rods have more side play than OEM rods.ALSO When putting the motor back together, make sure oil valley holes are clear. The crank seal for the case has grooves in it, the grooves need to be lined up with the hole in the case so oil can get to the bearings.

the rod has no discolouration from heat or lack of lube, just damaged rollers, and piston was starting to eat out on the top close to the exhaust.

Definitely detonation for what ever reason, timing too far advanced or most likely an air leak somewhere. Depending on how loud your bike is, you wont hear detonation, especially if you dont wear ear plugs. The rod failure is going to be something like Gary said, either built too tight or just a part failure, its not going to be related to the ignition.
