Interesting thread...fun to put a glimpse together of the frame/motor number combinations.

Although not much help with regard to Mike's original pursuit, my yellow tanker is:
-Frame #54 310 68501
-Engine #3 5401 270

Black cases and head, bare cylinder.

My red tanker is much later, '75 model. Tom

I'm sure most of you have heard this story too, but Jack told me once, they would open a crate of four bikes, and many times all four of them would be different in some way. Most European manufacturers were like that, on the fly changes and they used the parts they had left instead of doing instant hard year cut offs like the Japanese.

Tom,
Actually it looks like other than who ever owns the 310 68527 250 HS, assuming it is a Yellow Tank HS, from the Frame Number list on the production year page, your Frame #54 310 68501 with Engine
#3 5401 270 may be the next to last known Yellow tank 250 HS identified so far. This narrows down the range considerably. Thanks for your input. Soon I will try to compile the list and forward it for posting on the frame and engine # pages for easier reference. Mike

I am assuming that the 54 309 68735 and 54 310 68668 bike are both yellow tank and airbox 73's with the 2 tabs near the center rear frame loop? Thanks for the input. Mike

here's another twist to this saga. i have  late 73 'scrambler 310 frame #. it has a pipe mount for a 74 mx  pipe but it had both a yellow tank and airbox that i believe are original. probably pretty unique in that configuration.    chi jer

We here in Oz always thought that we got the bottom of the parts bin but maybe that is not the case. We certainly came to the conclusion that changes happened at any time. My cousin has a 74 watermelon tank 175 with I think is a 73 silver motor ( could be 74) but with a original style clutch cover that was painted silver. They must have run out of new covers the day that motor was assembled. All of it adds to the fun.

Ps Merry Christmas to you all
