The hare Scrambler that I have is missing the carb. Everything I have read says it came with a 34mm Bing, but the Penton manual that came with the bike lists the carb as a 36mm Bing. Does anybody know when they changed to the 36? Would I be better off finding a 36mm? Thanks for any input.

1973-1976 250 would be a 36mm Bing, after that some models had Lectrons then back to Bings

For what purpose are you going to use the bike?  If it is to show then getting the correct model bing would be important but if you plan on riding and racing then. Replacing the carb with a mikuni. Would be worth the effort.
In long run, it will run better and the cost less to set it up so that it will run right will cost you less with a mikuni.  Do a search on jetting a mikuni  for some of my post and you will find what I am running. Mine is a 76 but jetting wise it should get you in the ball park.

This discussion followed my fitting a 34mm mikuni on my harescrambler:

I agree with Thom, set it up and forget it.  My bike sits all winter, put fresh gas and it fires up in 2-3 kicks.

Thanks guys, Lots of good info in that thread, I plan on riding it so I will probably go the Mikuni route.

Steve, I bought a new Lectron for the 400 a couple yrs back,  Kevin @ Lectron custom made the spigot adapters so it was a direct bolt on with no modifications to the airbox boot.  It ran perfect right out of the box.  Also a big bonus, it's a 1=2 kick starter no matter how long it's been sitting.

-FWIW, I spent a lot of time and money trying to get the Bing to work well. The Lectron was money well spent.

If the Bing is not worn out they will work fine .

I probably would not have changed to the Mikuni if the Bing had not worn out.  It was just too expensive to rebuild the Bing.  My Harescrambler has been in storage since November, or so, and it fired on the third kick.  Probably would have fired on the second, but compression is so high that I missed the second kick!  Thanks Gary, for the great rebuild!

Just a thought... has anyone tried a Keihin PWK?
