Tank shipping question

Have any of you ever been concerned about shipping a gas tank that has a bit of a fuel smell to it?  Mostly have shipped tanks that never have had fuel in them, this one is a Steel tank with a possible need for an inside coating, and it has a slight fuel smell if you really put the old sniffer up close. Might need to work at doing some cleaning inside first! Any thoughts ?

Rinse it with acetone or lacquer thinner, and it will quickly dry and eliminate most of the smell and fuel remnants. I always tape over the filler neck if without a cap as well as any open petcock fittings before packing to ship. wrapping the tank well with Saran Wrap will also help. Mike

I read an article a while back that suggested running a pipe from your car's tail pipe into the tank and let it idle for 30 minutes. Never tried it though. I've shipped a few that I had washed out with muriatic acid and then simple green and finally a light coating of WD40. I never had a problem.

Just wrap it in a plastic bag and that will take care of the odor until the person buying it opens it.  I use the large black trash bags.  Hope this helps.

I appreciate the information. The concern I have is if a 4 legged or computer driven sniffer detects any trace of fuel scents during shipping, it could be an issue in todays society, and not without merit I might add.

It's been about a year plus since I received a Jackpiner MX tank from Washington state.  It came through with about 1/8 tank of who knows how old fuel in it.  The seller blamed the error on the person who packaged it..... [xx(]

i sent a puch tank to texas last week using fedex i just rinsed it out good aired it out, and put the cap on no problem

Duct tape over the openings, plastic bag it double box it and ship it, I have sent many with no problems

I agree, rinse well, dry and put in sealed plastic bag. Just don't ship it via air mail. They are much fussier. If they ask what's in the package - vintage motorcycle parts.
