Right off the top of my head, if it's a GS model, it will have a rear fender frame loop on it, the MC versions did not. In '76 and '77, the MC and GS versions had different frames, The gs version had multiple shock positions, and the MC frames only had one position.. If the serial number is started off with a 55 like you mention, it should be a GS. I think MC bikes had a different serial number. And if I'm correct on that respect, it out to be a 400. I have a '77 400 that was licensed in the state of Missouri back then and still had the state inspection stickers on it, but it was an MC version but had full light kit on it.
Sounds like you made a pretty good deal!

The frame # starting with 550 denoted your bike as a MC5 and the serial # 2530 puts it probably late 76, like the clock date you found on the clutch cover. The frame # does not identify which engine it came with, but all KTM engines of that era 125, 175, 250, & 400 were 6 speeds but some had 1st gear locked out by a removable stop bolt that could be changed to a shorter version to allow 6 gear operation. The engine # located above the ignition cover on the right hand side of the engine case identifies the engine size and year of manufacture. Lighting kits, rear frame loops and rear Enduro fenders were often added by dealers even on the MC5 models. Mike
