Whats your driving limits?

I found a rolling chassis I am interested in. It's a little over a 4 hour drive to pick it up. The price is good.
So my question is this, how far would you drive for a parts bike or even a complete bike? What point do you say the heck with it, it's not worth the drive.

Dale,
I love to drive and did just a tad over 1000 mile round trip in a day that included a POG meeting on the way home, all for a machine that all I knew about before leaving was the serial number and price, with not even a picture to look at.

Did a run to Albany NY for a Piner and took a side trip to visit Jim Hollerich's Museum in Mass., also dropped in on Paul Stannard on Stannard Mountain,Vermont as well, then drove thru a Mass. snowstorm for a few hours before hitting better weather while heading home thru the night. Had the wife along for this run.

Did a run to Atlanta from Mars, Pa to pick up a Jackpiner with the wife along. Stayed in Ashville NC on the way home and visited the Biltmore Estate while it was decorated for Christmas, visited the NC Arboretum, Dale Walksler at his museum in Maggie Valley, and then drove the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive all in a matter of a few days. When we got home the wife's comment was, " how about finding a Penton in Hawaii".

Personally, I look at each run as an adventure and look for places or people of interest along the way that I want to visit, and that was when gas was just a tad more expensive. I do avoid big cites whenever possible and try to get thru them during the night or at mid day if at all possible. Another thing that I hate is GPS telling you every turn, will often get you into trouble, I rely on a good old road atlas till I need to get to the final location.

My advice, Gas and Go !!!!,and take a road atlas....:)

4 hour drive is an easy day trip. I like Paul like to drive, you see a lot of the country, meet really nice people and possibly see someone's personal stash of cool bikes.

I strongly agree! I tend to try to pick up things and transport bikes in the same trip, so that my often spontaneous purchases can be shared amongst the expenses for traveling.
I enjoy going to places I've never been, and meeting people that I've only communicated with on the Internet or text. It's all about meeting new friends in all the places I go. I generally only charge enough for expenses and motel room with a bite to eat, so I'm not making much but I enjoy the trip, as does my fiance.
PS. I still have room for two or three bikes on the way back from York to Illinois. Mike

I went from NJ to NH for an RZ 350.  If it's a bike that you really want you always seem to make the time to take a long drive.  I guess if it was farther than 6 hours I might consider a shipper.  Just my 2 cents.

Most of my travels is what I can do in a day. Maybe up to 10 hrs one way.

Wow, I guess I need to suck it up and do more driving:). The frame I'm talking about is something I could use but I'm not excited about it. If it were a 2 hour ride I would have it already. For a 4 hour ride it would have to be a complete bike that I really want. I have been searching for a project for a month or so and my search has expanded since I can't find anything near home. I'm starting to look east of Ohio and north of Delaware. Usually I only look in NY and PA and new England.

Widen to east of Cleveland and north of D.C. Just where is this located? I travel all the time, maybe it's where I can get it for you.

Dale, what type of project are you looking for? Possibly I can be of assistance.. I intend to bring a few "projects" to York as well. Send me an email if you wish.  [email protected]

If the item you need to pick up is towards Pittsburgh I would be glad to be of assistance.

I once drove 15 hours one-way for a $100 Husky frame.  It also had the Ohlins, tank, wheels and engine, but it was the frame I was after.  I took the family, we stopped at the Dallas/Fort Worth stock yards and made a Christmas vacation out of it about 10 years ago.  Like Paul said, every trip is an adventure.  Have Fun!

The bike is in New Hampshire Dan. I'm not real interested in it if I can find a complete bike.

New Hampshire is a nice ride, very scenic. What is it you are looking for in terms of a bike?

Dale Sonnenschein

I was looking for a vintage class bike. It's one of those things where when I see it I know I want it. The roller is a mid 80s husky.
Not really what I was looking for but I wasn't having any luck finding a bike that caught my fancy. I want a 250cc but I would be open to a bigger bore. I would like a 73 or 74 to ride vintage class. I was mainly looking on POG, craigslist, ebay and Marks swap meet.

I have a 76 RM250A with Vintage race gear, originally dealer sponsored in the NY area which would classify for Historic Post Vintage & a 78.5 RM250C2 which would be Post Vintage. I rode my own 78.5 RM250C2 in the reunion ride outfitted with PE250 gear in MacArthur OH, so they could work for enduro events also if you were so inclined. Mike
