New member here from '14 - first post.
I've been trolling for a white Mint 400 and I've noticed something in all the examples I've researched.
Is the right engine cover the full coverage type covering the countershaft sprocket?
If so, what are these covers that just cover the ignition leaving the sprocket completely exposed?
I've seen enough variety of trimmed covers that the full cover must be the stock set-up.
But what is the smaller cover over the ignition only?
Thanks for any and all replies.

They have been cutoff which was a common MX mod so the mud would not pack up in there.  There were also some that were small and made by Preston Petty but they are now few and far between.

Yes, I used to trim my covers as well way back then.
I was just curious since some of the small covers are enclosed on the back facing side so those I guess are either a fantastic trim job or this PP cover you mentioned.
The PP cover said "KTM" on it?

Although most, if not all of the mint 400's and the majority of Enduro KTM powered Pentons used the full size cover, later MC5 bikes and other MX bikes including early KTMs up to 1979 used just the smaller magnesium cover that covered only the ignition, and not the sprocket. Starting in 1979, KTM begin using a gray, then black, plastic ignition only cover. All of these covers up to mid 1980 will interchange. Mike

That's probably it - the later MC5 cover.
Thanks so much - I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions if I zero in on a 400.
They say timing in life is everything.
My early '70s timing was a tad off with regard to my off-road adventure.
After modifying a '71 Kawasaki F7 into a "MX" bike and subsequently riding it until I realized it was....lacking, I bought a '72 Husqvarna 250CR which has been not one of the most highly praised years/models. I enjoyed it though. After realizing motocross was limited in NJ, in '73 I decided to look at real enduro bikes. I was all over the Penton JP but being young & a bit dopey, I just could get past going back in displacement. DOH! So went back to the K brand and got a just released '74 F11 250 and proceeded to pour a ton of money (relatively speaking) to try and make it a real enduro bike; PP everything, Bassani, Curnutts, etc. How I missed the Penton 250 Scrambler and subsequent 400 Mint, I'll never know.
So 40 odd years later. I'm trying to rectify that slip-up.
Lucky in love instead....
