I usually just use a uni-filter which comes with a cage. NU1402-ST Mike

Believe it or not a true story! My dr650 had a slight hicup at low RPM . I put on a Twinair filter no other changes. Hicup was gone! I swear its true![:0]

The effect of the filter depends on the condition it was applied to, or what caused the "hic-up." Was it a stumble or blubber, in which case it was rich on the bottom end, and the Twin-Air flowed better and helped clean it up. If it was a hesitation or bog, then it might have been lean on the bottom end, and the Twin-Air restricted the air flow a bit, and helped it draw a bit more fuel. You almost have to be there and riding it to really know.
Another possibility for coating a cage is getting a can of the stuff you dip your piers handle into to coat them. Strip off the old stuff and wire wheel the frame, put the coating in a pan that will let you rotate the cage through it like a wheel and coat everything, then let dry. The Re-Rack will be slicker and a filter will go on easier, I think.

Cage update:  So, I stripped the old coating off, cleaned the metal and gave it a good inspection to be sure all the welds were good.  Living in the armpit of Florida, one does not always get what one wants....  I couldn't find the coating for the dishwasher racks, so I bought the coating for dipping tools into.  I put two coats on, so all the sharp edges are smooth.  After letting it dry for two days, I tested the finish with some pre-mix to see if there would be a reaction. The finish doesn't come off, but, the rag I used to wipe the finish had a small amount of color from the coating on it.  Air filter oil doesn't seem to bother it, but, I'm not sure about the gas test...  Any thoughts?

Greetings Skiracer,

Given that you have asked, my opinion is that it is a bad place to be messing with or experimenting with a process that is not tested and full proof. Suck a little piece of that coating into the carb or engine, if it would come loose, and the results if nothing else could ruin your day and the associated costs of that day such as fuel, entry fees and such are out the window if your bike quits running right or worse.

I remember a situation at the 73 ISDT when a rider had a little bit of silicone get ingested into his carb and the results were not pleasant on numerous fronts.

I would think that there would be a number of those cages around.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Another thought would be to coat what you have now with some epoxy brushed on with an acid brush. Or spray on any kind of high temp clear coat that should be fuel proof. Epoxy will go over just about everything. Paul has a valid point, but considering where the filter is mounted and how it it held in place, if you have an adequate coverage of epoxy over the cage, the risk of anything coming loose would be minimal in my estimation. Letting the original coating dry for another few days to a week may improve it's properties also. Set it in a window where the sun shines in and let it bake like that. Dry to the touch after a few days doesn't necessarily mean fully cured. Keep us posted.

Paul and Dan,

Yep.  I am not getting a warm and cuddly feeling about gas effecting the coating.  I have no interest in making this a science experiment; can't afford it.  I am going to strip off what I have, and move forward with something else, as in the coating for the dishwasher racks. Thanks for your input, it is greatly appreciated.  Stay tuned for future progress (?) !!

Jim, you could use it as is with no coating in a pinch. The worst thing would be servicing the filter and having it get caught on the frame. I would contact Larry and take the safe route with a good one from him. Then you have no questions in the back of your mind about failure. Try looking at truck bed spray liner. That may be gas resistant.

How about powder coating? Maybe a local vendor could include the cage in a run of other parts at a reduced cost, might wind up with a odd color tho...
