Filter cages...

Has anyone removed the original white plastic coating from a filter cage, and the use the cage either as raw metal or to paint them?  I have one that the coating is cracking and I need to find a fix for it.

Go to the hardware store and look for a product called 'Re-Rack" or something like that. It's a white colored material that you paint onto your dishwasher holding rack. As those wear and chip, the original coating peels off and the steel rack gets rusty. This stuff almost looks like white-out for office use and applies the same way.
 Otherwise, just strip it and paint it, and put a couple coats of clear on it to help protect it from oil.

Strip off the loose parts of the coating. No paint - it will have a film of oil on it.

Without the coating the edges tear and and poke holes in the filter after a few on an offs.

Another possibility for coating a cage is getting a can of the stuff you dip your pliers handle into to coat them. Strip off the old stuff and wire wheel the frame, put the coating in a pan that will let you rotate the cage through it like a wheel and coat everything, then let dry. The Re-Rack will be slicker and a filter will go on easier, I think.

Update to this thread : If you buy a new UNI filter you no longer need the cage . The new UNI filter is a paper element w/frame and a foam sock . This is the only filter I see available .
