Read where Penton & KTM finally got their bikes handling and with good power band . I rode and raced all Japenese bikes and some european in 1973 thru 1978 and never found any in my opinion with a better power band than the Penton brand . My list is long on from 100's thru 400's and that article is old but sure was not my take in competion or woods riding .  Just thought I would throw that out there and feel free to chime in with your take at that time. I have a 1974 issue of Cycle World with a test on the 250. They liked the power and handling but said it is "not for beginners ". I remember they did complain about the front brake being weak.
