i picked up a 73 125  motor was stuck from sitting 25 years  got piston free  crank turns n minimal lateral play  no play up and down  wont shift out of neutral up or down any tips on how to get tranny to shift THANKS JOE

Shift key is probably broken if lever moves both ways but remains in neutral.

Hi Joe,

I am assuming that the engine is just sitting on the bench, not in a chassis. When I am trying to "bench shift" a Sachs engine I hold the countershaft sprocket with my right hand while working the shifter with my left. As you push either up or down on the shifter turn the sprocket to allow the shift key to move into the selector key slots of the next gear. This works best if the clutch is still on the engine as it will hold that end of the transmission stationary.

If you are still getting no results, I would suggest pulling the clutch cover off and watching what is happening when you try the same procedure. Possibly the ratchet pawl, or another of the integrated parts that transfers the "up and down movement" of the shift lever into the "in and out motion" that moves the indent arm,  and attached selector key, through the gears is amiss. If everything is working as it should and the indent arm is indeed moving in and out but no gears are being engaged, then as Larry suggested, the selector key may be sheered.

Hope this helps and good luck.

motor is still in frame  pulled clutch cover off its gummed up with old oil  got it to shift will clean all the gunk out

Joe,

While you have the clutch cover off you may want to pull the clutch off, disassemble it and make sure all the plates are OK and free, clean it up and then re-assemble it. It isn't hard to do, the biggest issue is getting the plates properly aligned when re-assembling it. A hub gear is the ticket for getting everything aligned, they are not hard to come by or expensive. If you go this route and need a hub gear let me know, I should have lots of them floating around, just need to look, will be glad to send one your way. :)

When those clutches sit for a long time the plates will many times get stuck together, usually you can get the clutch to break loose when riding it, but it may break loose at one plate and still have many of the plates stuck together and not really work properly.

Just my 2 cents....

On another note, there are two bolts on the bottom of the engine, one is an oil drain plug and the one with the funny head is the Kickstarter stop. Best advise is to not touch either one. The drain plug after many years of sitting will sometimes tear the threads out of the case if you try to remove it. Just lean the bike way over and let the oil drain. Hopefully there is no water in the oil.
