What's the best way to get varnish and junk out of an old tank. What about a sealer after the cleanup?

Hi Blue, As you spend some time here you will find that this is a frequent problem. It is all of the barn fresh bikes that continue to be revealed. If you go back to pages 7 and 9 you will find some responses to what you are asking about. The title is "Tank mung" in order to get there you can either use the search mode or there is a box that will allow you to show more pages, if you use this click on the one for "show pages for 60 days" or something like that. One of the guys came up with a good idea, it involes BB's, some kind of cleaner and old time Rock and Roll. Go check it out.
Good luck with your project.

Kreem is a three part process that will, clean out the mung, and seal the tank from further problems forever. If done properly per the instructions.Done improperly it makes a small problem a big one.Email me and I can give you some tips.I have used this in many ,many restorations with good result. However I can't stress enough not done properly you will hate me for suggesting it.Do not use in a fiberglass tank even though the manufacturer recommends it.

tomale

so what happens when you use it in a fiberglass tank?

I did the tank mung cure. Basically it is a couple of cans of Berryman's B12 and the biggest box of BBs (6000) I found at Wal-@#$%. Dump a can of Berryman's in and about 1/2 the box. Then shake for a long time. I removed the petcocks and plugged them with corks. As for re-li9ning the tank...it never was lined in the first place, so I left it. If it concerns you, go to a boat supply house and buy some epoxy resin and catalyst. Epoxy will stick to just about anything, and doesn't seem to be affected by gasoline at all. The only time i had an experience with Kreem was when I worked as a tech in a Harley shop and someone brought in a bike that wouldn't run from all the Kreem in the carb. I wouldn't use it.

The stuff seems to heat up fiberglass and scares the hell out of you, some chemical reaction,we contacted the manufacturer and they didn't have a good explanation.we use the resin in our glass tanks as pointed out above. They obviously don't rrust so the acid etch process and cleaning featurs of Kreem are a waste anyway. As to a Harley owner not applying the product properly and having problems.Well as I said we do this for a living and I wouldn't paint a steel tank without it.I had one leak after 100 hrs in the paint job on  a Triumph once and that was enough.

Sunday afternoon and the TANK (fiberglass ):
Purchased one bottle of Gunk Motor Flush and a bottle of  Marvel Mystery a box of BB's and a spray can of Berryman B-12 CHEMTOOL. Washed out with a little new gas to start with then added half the bottle of Gunk Flush and half box of BB's. Did the
"tomale shuffle", rock and roll, twist and shout, off  and on for about 15 min, drained the Gunk and gunk, left the BB's put the remainder of the Gunk in and another 10 min shake.
Drained again and shook out about half the BB's, they actually collect the varnish on  some of them , took the Berryman and with the straw sprayed the remaining spots. THIS STUFF IS KILLER (ware your safety glasses as it really burns the skin) . Drained and removed all the BB's washed out one more time with gas. WALLA new tank inside.
Did the carb disassembly and clean with the Berryman Chemtool . No Problem this stuff eats varnish.
Really Bad Metal Tank Next.

What stores are you finding the Berryman Chemtool in?

Rocket:
Parts Plus and Wally World, most all auto supply stores have it here. Some posters talked like they are getting it in nonairosol that would really be nice to slosh around in a tank but I was unable to find it in a liquid.

I neglected to mention in my Tank Mung cure...Buy the Berryman's B-12 in the liquid cans, NOT spray. You should find it at Wal-@#$%. The next rusty steel tank I get, I'm going to follow up the BB/B-12 shuffle with a bottle of Naval Jelly and more BBs.

tomale

The Tomale shuffle huh, Glad to hear that it worked out for you.

Worked great with with the liqued B12, and without the Tomale shuffle : ) Did the Blue_Dog Boogie : ). Still don't know what the Marvel Mystery was for BD. Left that part out of the recipe. Tank real clean now, woo woo, thanks guys.

Dale:

Didn't use the Marvel Mystery Oil, the instructions on the bottle sound like it would work as well as the Gunk just had it as a backup. Its in a graduated bottle that can be reused as you can see the liquid level inside, will add it to fuel in the truck. (No I never thought about it as a cocktail).
That B-12 is impressive, I'm going to try it on some cases and use it as a clutch pad cleaner (experimental on clutch pads see if it will lift the oil out).
The Blue_Dog Boogie I kinda like that. Have a good one.
