I'm posting this as a point of interest. I ran across a restored 1972 DKW 175 Enduro today at a shop in Oceanside CA. Looked to be in very good condition with all the lights and a California registration. Asking price $1,699. I don't know anything about this bike, but if anyone is interested, I'll provide the phone number of the shop.

There was no DKW 175 made in 1972. The first 175cc DKW / Hercules brought into the USA was the Hercules GS175/7a in 1975. Then the 1976 GS175/7a Hercules. These Hercules were sold as DKW in Italy those years. DKW was selling 100cc and 125cc bikes in 1972-74. The first 175 was a 1975 model. I did buy a similar discribed bike as a one off factory racer, I knew better and prove the seller wrong. I bought it for the engine only. Doug Wilford can confirm this.

Dwight, There were a few early "Toaster Tank" DKW's brought in. The exact same "72" bike with the only change being a 175cc Sachs engine instead of the 100/125.  The latest one I restored even had 35mm Ceriani's on the front end VS the leading link.  Most of these were on the West coast but one or two made it to the Mid west.

It would have to been at least a 1974 model because Sachs didn't make that engine until late 1974.  I never heard of a Toaster tank with a 175 engine. I will inquire of Leo Keller as he is the expert on Hercules/DKW/Sachs motorcycles.
I have one but the owner was claiming that it was a one off 1972 prototype factory racer, which it wasn't. It has a 1975 engine and pipe on it.  Sure they weren't 135cc engines ?  Sachs did make a very few of those to compete in the 175 class.

Hello Dwight,

I attached a photo of a 72 US model with Ceriani fork. Is it what you call
the toaster tank?

The bike was called "Boondocker 125" with 32 mm Ceriani forks (without
lights it was called "Hornet")

The first 175 motors were used in the 1974 CMF types, but only a handful (it
was advertised, but not availlable, gas tank in orange). I remember one
factory racer (Wagner in 1974).
The 175 cc with the central bone frame were 132 ccs, privat built, most in
Maico frames (Loewer Sachs).

My first Hercules was a 72 model and I started racing that year, so I'm
pretty sure that there was no 175 factory in 1972.

Hello Dwight,

look what I found:
from motor nr. 7549691 to nr.  7549691 (just 1 unit!) to Hercules factory, type 1751/6, 24 hp, Sept. 25. 1973

It is a part of a list where the Sachs company sold their motors to. There are lots of 1251/B and DGS types, also lots of 1752 motors, but only one 1751/6 from 1973. The others from 1974 and 1975 are not listed.

It seems to me that they used the 175 cc motors later.

Leo
