Clutch arm..old vs. new

I was looking at a bike that has what the manual describes as the old style (bearing cover)"clutch arm assembly". The new style has a chain guard and the old one does not. Did the old style not have a chain guard? If not, does someone make a guard that can be installed so that the clutch arm will be protected? It looks awful vunerable. See Al B. Thom,
 there were two styles of case protectors used for the old style. both protect the clutch arm better than the new style .
 you can make the second version of the old style case protector from a piece of flat stock fairly easy. The first version would be harder to make and require some welding i think. if the chain comes off on the old style protectors it contacts the flat stock and stops, never gets to the clutch actuator.
we can scan a pic of the protector if you like . if no one has them for sale we could do a trace of the one on Peters bike and mail it to you.

Thanks, I was planning on calling Al in the morning anyway. I am in need of a few things so I will give him a call.
What is strange is that the motor that I am working on is a 78 motor but the acuating arm looks like it came off a 74 or something. Do not know the history but I am guessing that either the one that came of the motor either was broken or wore out and was replaced with what was available. Is one better than the other?
