On a gas tank I just acquired the petcocks are orientated so the lever is not align as it should be, but everything is tight. I am not sure how to align them. I don't want to mess up the tank. Is there a threaded nipple molded into the tank and then the fitting that accepts the petcock screwed on to it ? I can't tell for sure. Thanks for the help.

There is a nipple that is cast into the tank.  The nut on the petcock has right hand threads for the nipple and left hand threads for the threads on the petcock.  You have to loosen the nut on the nipple and adjust the petcock to the position you want and then tighten to the tank.  It takes a couple of times to end up in the right place.  Be gentle doing this, extra careful when you first loosen from the tank nipple.

Let me confirm that. Many tanks have been ruined by breaking the tank nipples loose.
