72 Jackpiner Restoration Questions

I was given a 72 Jackpiner that I have decided to restore and have a few questions that I hope someone can help me with.  Just a little background, I am not doing a "completely original" restore, but I want to be close with as few mods as possible.  I have not worked on one of these since the early 70's:

1)   The bike I am restoring is a basket case, literally I picked it up in several boxes.  It came without a carb.  How do I know if it originally had a Bing or Amal?  I believe in 72 both were used.

2)   I am tearing down the engine and want to repaint it when I am done. It was originally black.  Where can I get this PJ1 paint that I see discussed here?  Also what is the best way to strip off the remaining paint, glass bead blast or chemical?

3)   I have not completely split the block open yet and noticed that the shaft for the kick starter appears to be crooked.  I don't think its bent but something is wrong here.  Should I be looking for anything in particular when I do split this?

Thanks in advance.  I'm sure I'll have lots more questions over the coming months and hopefully will be able to provide some answers with the experience I gain.

Question 1:  I don't believe any of the 72's came with a Bing, not sure a 100%.  I imagine a lot of the 72's got switched over to Bing's and Mikuni's because the Amal didn't work very well.

Question 2:  Glass bead blast works the best.  If you do the inner cases, it is best to remove all bearings.  I use Rustoleum semi-gloss black for painting the black motors.

Question 3:  Sounds like you will need to split the cases to find the kicker problem.

Good luck with your project.  I am restoring a 72 JP right now.  Hope to have it done by the February meeting.

Rocket,

Thanks for response. You mentioned that lots of people switched the carbs over to Mikuni's. Any issues with switching this or should I just look for a 30MM Mikuni?  Also how does the Rustoleum Paint hold up?

I would suggest if you are going to ride this machine, install a Bing.  A Mikuni will work, but it is a very tight fit with the airboot.  I would say the Rustoleum will hold up as well as the original.  The reason I say that is because, when I bead blast the cases, the paint comes off very easily.

I am in a similar situation to Kevin; parked my '72 Jack Pine after the last race in '75 and have it completely disassembled and ready to do a rebuild.  Does any one have any comments or suggestions on this process before I dive in?  I am curious about certain aspects such as, parts contacts, engine rebuild specialists, bad experiences, dos and don'ts, etc.
Also, is it considered better to restore to showroom original or leave it as I had modified it?
Thanks

My 1972 Jackpiner came with a Bing. It was a late year model but was a seat breather not frame breather type. I would go with a Mikuni though.
a 30 or 32mm.

The 72 that I am restoring has a serial number of 7-20957234 which makes it a very late 72.  It has an Amal carb.  Do you happen to know the serial number of your 72.  Just curious.

Kevin  I have (2) 1973 Jackpiners, I'm rebuilding one right now and I know the Bings can be hooked up fairly easy with parts readily available from the suppliers.   The kicker shaft sounds just like mine, all twisted from starting in self defense (hehe)  and I found a new one, either through Al B or the evil bay.
also I just wanted you to know that the Jackpiner is the best bike John eva built !!  JackPiners rule  Yeeha [8D]

Ray,

Thanks for the feedback, Im sure I'll get there it may just take some time.  I see your signature as "Down East Pentons", where in Maine are you?  I used to live in Mid-Coast (Bath) and still get up that way quite a bit.

Thanks,

KD
