...with the 2.9 gallon "Watermelon" style Enduro tank, and having gas tank decals like on the 73's, meaning the short 4" long decals with the bikes name like "250cc Hare Scrambler" at top. Or before the long black and white striped decals arrived.

The new '73 1.8 gallon MX tank definetly came out before the long B&W decals did, and I've seen MX tanks like that both in person and in pictures.
But I've yet to find a picture of a early "74" Enduro with the watermelon tank that does'nt have the long B&W tank decals.
My original Hare Scrambler Enduro (one of the ealiest red ones, 311 XXXXX ) has the decals from a '73 Hare Scrambler because they're even black...must be it was before they had the white "Hare Scrambler" decals ready to go against the new red color......
HOLD ON here a minute, I just thought of something. Why are there white "Hare Scrambler" decals?, by then were'nt they replaced by the long B&W striped models. What model are those meant for? You would'nt use both styles on the same tank. And after '75 the 250 was'nt really called the "Hare Scrambler" any more, was it?
Well, at least I know I'm going to keep this one the same way I found it.
Thanks for your help,
Bob

Hi Bob,

As far as I can tell, 311 was the first appearance of the red/silver Harescrambler.  Several other changes took place in 311 as well, including the watermelon enduro tank, new 250 pipes, side rear fender mounts, and the rear brake arm with holes.  I also believe the tall, 18" seat debuted a month later in 312.

I can't explain the decals that are on your tank but they sound cool.  Anything is possible with a Penton!  I have an original 311 MX Harescrambler with the low 18" seat, MX tank and big striped tank decals.  I'll email you a picture of it and a picture of the earliest red/silver enduro Harescrambler I had seen up until now...a nice original 312 owned by fellow member Kirk Sessions.
